Cartagena, The Hospital General Universitario Santa Lucia opened 8th October
Cartagena Spain, the first outpatient departments are now operational
The new Cartagena Hospital of Santa Lucia, or to give it its' correct title, El Hospital General Universitario Santa Lucia , opened its' doors on Friday for its' first medical consultations.
The hospital has been named for the Barrio nearest to its location on the outskirts of the city near to the Parque Mediterraneo Retail Park, the traditional fishing district of Cartagena and one of the most historic.
The 700 bed hospital has cost 150 million euros and taken 5 years to build from scratch, and once it is in full service, the plans are to close the Hospital Naval which is on the opposite side of Cartagena, and re-fit the Rosell in the centre of the city.
This will give Cartagena and the Mar Menor two high quality hospitals fitted with the most up to date equipment, and should be able to fully satisfy the demands of the area.
It will take several months to gradually bring all the different sections of the hospital online, but it is hoped that it will be functioning fully by Christmas.
For now, there are several outpatient departments opening for business, with the first 100 patients attending the hospital on Friday.
The departments in question are : Digestivo, Reumatología, Hematología, Cardiología, Endocrinología y Nutrición and Neumología. ( We've left them in Spanish as this is what your appointment card will say.)
It's advisable to check your appointment documentation if you think this could be you, as these departments and their staff are now in the Santa Lucia, not the Naval.
At the moment no contact numbers have been issued for the Santa Lucia, but we'll add them into the Cartagena Hospitals list once they're available . If you have a query reference an appointment location,
The Consejera for Health, María Ángeles Palacios, explained that 20 timetables for 6 different specialities had been selected to enable the systems to be gradually implemented and tested to ensure that everything was functioning smoothly, and that gradually the services would be increased until the hospital was operating fully.
Around 50 staff started work at the hospital full time on Friday, the aim being to gradually transfer staff from the Naval as each department opens.
At the moment there is only one bus service to the hospital which runs from the Plaza Bastarreche bus depot every 15 minutes between 7.30am and 3.30pm, a service which will gradually be extended as the hospital increases in usage.
