ARCHIVED - 1831 new covid cases on Friday as hospital admissions in Murcia region reach record level
Yet again the region breaks its record for maximum number of active cases; 14,416
This week has seen a brutal upturn in the number of new coronavirus cases being reported in the Murcia Region, propelling Murcia from the lower end of the “covid leader board” up to second position as the region of Spain with the second highest number of cases per head of population in the country as of Thursday evening (this may change when the Friday national figures are published this evening).
The Murcia AI accumulated incidence rate has now increased to 789.5 cases per 100,000 of population over 7 days and 1134 per 100,000 over 14 days, both extremely high levels and more than double the national incidence rates.
Just to give an indication of how this compares to the European situation, these are the 14 day rates for other European countries (taken from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control), figures per 100,000 of population;France 329, Italy 379, Spain 522, Germany 324, Netherlands 623, Belgium 225, Sweden 790, Portugal 901, Greece 82.
So the Murcian figures are extremely high.
There is only one municipality in the region with no cases; Aledo, and everywhere else the AI rate has gone through the roof.
Bearing in mind that the national average across Spain over 14 days was 522 per 100,000 last night, these are the figures for the Murcia Region over 14 days, the highest being 2946 in Moratalla, Albudeite 2767, Fortuna 2739, Yecla 2451, Mula 2422, Abanilla 2105, Caravaca 2003 and so on.
And these are the 7 day rates the highest being Albudeite with 2403, Moratalla 2066, Yecla 2009, Fortuna 1859, Mula 1824:
Of the 1,831 new cases reported in the last 24 hours, 578 correspond to the municipality of Murcia (which has reported 3835 cases in the last week alone) , 216 to Cartagena, 120 to Yecla, 95 to Mula, 93 to Molina de Segura, 71 to Caravaca de la Cruz, 71 to Lorca, 64 to Jumilla, 45 to Cieza, 36 to Torre Pacheco, 34 to Águilas, 32 to Alcantarilla, 28 to Las Torres de Cotillas, 27 to Fortuna, 25 to Moratalla, 23 to San Pedro del Pinatar, 22 to Abarán, 22 to San Javier, 18 to Totana, 17 to Cehegín, 14 to Abanilla, 14 to Ceutí, 13 to Archena, 12 to Alhama de Murcia, 12 to Bullas, 11 to La Unión, 10 to Alguazas, 10 to Beniel, 10 to Santomera, 9 to Los Alcázares, 9 to Blanca, 9 to Mazarrón, 7 to Fuente Álamo, 7 to Lorquí, 5 to Albudeite, 5 to Calasparra and the remainder spread around the region in smaller quantities.
This latest set of new diagnoses brings the total number of active cases in the region to 14,416, another record high.

So it’s no surprise that the hospitalisations are now increasing at a worrying rate and in the last 24 hours have reached their highest ever point since the pandemic began: During the last 24 hours a further 57 patients have been hospitalised in the region, bringing the total of those with more severe covid cases requiring hospital treatment to 640, and the number in intensive care rising to 103.
This is the largest number of patients suffering from coronavirus admitted to the SMS at any time since the first cases were detected in the region in March last year.
There are also 13,776 patients with mild cases in isolation, and many more in preventative quarantine, some of whom will develop more severe symptoms and require hospital treatment within the next 2 weeks.
Fatalities:
Five further fatalities have been reported in the last 24 hours; two females and three males, aged 76, 90, 84, 90 and 83 from Murcia, Cartagena, Caravaca, Santomera and Cieza.
Data at a glance:
New positive cases reported in the last 24 hours: 1,831 (1901 yesterday)
Confirmed cases since the beginning of the outbreak; 75,902
Total number of active cases: 14,416
Patients in home isolation with mild symptoms: 13,776
Total number of hospitalisations: 640 (+57)
Total number in ICU intensive care units : 103 (+5)
Total cured: 60,684
Total deaths: 802 (+5)
Testing: total of 667,975 PCR and antigen tests and 87,107 serological tests to date
Positivity rate of tests today: 17.4%
For this reason the Murcian regional government has banned all social contact for the next two weeks in an attempt to slow down the spread of the virus, so as always, the request is that residents stay at home and avoid any contacts in order to try and bring the hospital admissions down again.
