ARCHIVED - Murcia Region reports 275 new coronavirus cases and one death; 22nd September
The number of active cases has gone down today, with the recoveries exceeding the new cases
The Region of Murcia reported a second day of markedly lower cases than last week on Tuesday, with a figure of under 300 new cases for the second consecutive day.Last week figures increased substantially; Monday 457, Tuesday 499, Wednesday 370, Thursday 447,Friday 675, Saturday 555, Sunday 566, but yesterday the figure dropped down to 234 and today it’s only slightly higher at 275.
This is good news, but it does seem very odd that the figures were climbing so determinedly last week and then have suddenly fallen back so significantly.
The obvious reason is that PCR testing has been reduced, but the health service still undertook 2,547 tests in the last 24 hour period, giving a percentage of 10.79% positives. Last week the tests were reporting 15% positives, but the regional health minister maintains that at the weekend pre-surgical testing is done in preparation for the operations of the coming week, so this in itself should lower the positives rate as these patients are not being tested as they are expected to have covid, but to make sure they don´t.
Obviously, the more testing that is done, the higher the number of cases uncovered, as most of the cases detected are mild or asymptomatic, and as all of these require some form of follow-up, significant resource is required. The region has been facing the same issues as the rest of Spain, with the public failing to comply with quarantine regulations, and it’s already been proven that if those testing positive fail to complete the quarantine period, then there’s no point “detecting” them in the first place, as the object of the exercise is defeated.
Today the Spanish Minister of Health gave a very clear sign that the country is about to adopt a 10 day quarantine period instead of the current 14, hoping that the public will be more inclined to comply with a shorter quarantine, so this announcement is likely to follow fairly soon (Catalonia and the Basque Country have jumped the gun and announced they will be reducing the quarantine period in their own regions regardless of what the national Government does).
The number of positives has failed to increase the number of active cases as 347 people were classified as having overcome covid in the last 24 hours, and as this total is higher than the number of new cases, the total number of active cases has fallen for the second consecutive day, so is now 7,592.
The total number of cases detected since the pandemic began is 17,436.
Of the new 275 positives detected, 95 correspond to the municipality of Lorca, 67 to Murcia, 15 to Molina de Segura, 14 to Cartagena, 14 to Totana, 11 to Jumilla, 6 to Puerto Lumbreras, 5 to Alcantarilla, 5 to Alguazas, and 5 to Yecla.
Note, the first figure shown is the actual number of cases diagnosed in the last 7 days, the second is the IA rate for the last 7 days (number of cases per 100,000 of population): In brackets the number of cases is indicated as either a positive or negative compared to the situation on Thursday)
