ARCHIVED - 1.7 million facemasks arrive for medical professionals in Murcia
20,000 rapid coronavirus testing kits have still not reached the regional health service
There was some welcome news for the employees of the regional health service of Murcia on Monday as they struggle to cope with the demand for their services during the coronavirus emergency, with the arrival of large numbers of facemasks which will afford them vital protection over the coming weeks.
Already there are at least 225 health and medical professionals diagnosed with Covid-19 infection in Murcia and the shortage of protective equipment for these “front-line” workers has been a growing concern, but on Monday a shipment of 200,000 masks arrived from the national Ministry of Health for distribution around the Region. In total 10.1 million masks were sent to the 17 regions, over half of them to the health authorities in Madrid, Catalunya and Andalucía, along with 9 million pairs of protective gloves and numerous protective goggles and other equipment.
Shortly afterwards the Murcia health service (SMS) was further boosted by the arrival on Tuesday of another 1.5 million masks purchased directly, enabling medics to face up to their current daily usage figure of 100,000 per week with a far greater degree of confidence. Another 500,000 are expected to arrive later on Tuesday, including 50,000 high-protection FFP2 masks, and over the coming days the delivery is anticipated of even greater volumes of equipment: 7.5 million surgical standard masks, 1.5 million FFP2 masks, 78,000 FFP3 masks, 8.5 million pairs of gloves and various other items of vital protective equipment.
On the other hand, though, Manuel Villegas, the minister for Health in Murcia, admits that he does not know when 20,000 rapid coronavirus testing kits which are on order will become available for use, and the number of tests being performed is actually being reduced. This may sound like bad news, but Sr Villegas maintains that the top priority at present is to isolate all patients who have symptoms which may be caused by Covid-19. On Monday only 250 PCR tests were carried out (as opposed to over 400 on previous days) and there is no doubt that as a result of this under-testing the number of cases so far reported in Murcia (974) is understated.
Remember: LOCKDOWN MEANS LOCKDOWN. STAY AT HOME. STAY SAFE AND DO YOUR BIT TO REDUCE THE SPREAD OF CORONAVIRUS.

What to do if you are in the Region of Murcia and believe you may have contracted the virus
The regional government has set up a special helpline to supply information to members of the public (900 121212) if they suspect that they may have contracted the virus rather than going straight to hospital or to a medical centre.
Sensible precautions
The advice being issued to members of the public by medical authorities all over the world coincides on the following points:
- Wash hands frequently with either soap and water or a sanitiser gel
- Catch coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues – and throw the tissues away immediately after use before immediately washing your hands!
- If you don’t have a tissue, use your sleeve – and wash the item of clothing used at the next opportunity
- AVOID touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
- AVOID close contact with people who are unwell
- Don´t panic!
