ARCHIVED - 10,000 protection suits bought in for medics as 28-year-old doctor dies in Cuenca
Doctors, medical staff and officers of the law are especially exposed to the risk of Covid-19 infection
The coronavirus pandemic has caused a severe shortage of protection equipment for staff of the overstretched health departments of Spain, with as many as 12,300 medical professionals having been confirmed to have contracted Covid-19, and the latest efforts by the government to remedy the situation and ease the fears of hospital staff include the arrival on Sunday of a military transport plane carrying a shipment of 10,000 protection suits.
A Hercules C-130 landed during the afternoon at the airfield of Torrejón de Ardoz with the suits purchased from the Czech Republic in response to an urgent request made to NATO’s Euro-Atlantic Disaster Response Coordination Centre (EADRCC) for materials such as disposable smocks, respirators, surgical masks and other protective equipment. But for many health and medical professionals the shipment has arrived rather late, with those among their number accounting for over 14 per cent of all confirmed Covid-19 cases in Spain (double the proportion rereported in Italy) after 3,000 more cases were confirmed in the sector over the weekend.
This is partly due to the fact that tests are only being carried out on medical staff suspected of having the virus due to the acute shortage of tester kits and the great majority of suspected cases remain untested.
The threat caused by the pandemic was underlined still further by the death of a fourth practising doctor from the virus in Spain, a 28-year-old woman who worked at a medical centre in Mota del Cuervo, in the province of Cuenca. Sara Bravo was asthmatic and her condition was complicated by Covid-19, and she died after being admitted to hospital in Ciudad Real, becoming the second doctor in the region of Castilla-La Mancha to fall victim to the coronavirus in 48 hours: the first was 65-year-old Santos Julián Martínez.
Despite being one of the regions of Spain with the lowest population density, the official figures show that the region of Castilla-La Mancha has been hit especially hard by Covid-19, with almost 6,000 cases and over 600 related deaths confirmed by Monday 29th March.
While the shortage of protective equipment has made the medical profession a particularly high-risk one in Spain over the last few weeks the same can also be said of various other sectors in the “front line” during the emergency, including the forces of law and order. On Saturday a new shipment of over a million facemasks was distributed to police and Guardia Civil officers and prison officers, but already over 700 officers of the Guardia and the Policía Nacional have contracted the virus and various have lost their lives.
Medical staff and police officers are at particular risk, of course, because their duties place them in direct contact with numerous members of the public, but they are also among the most vital members of society. Unfortunately, the officers of the law are constantly obliged to apprehend members of the public who are determined to disobey the lockdown orders, and every time they do so they are in danger of being infected by people who are unwittingly carrying the infection.
Remember: LOCKDOWN MEANS LOCKDOWN. STAY AT HOME. STAY SAFE AND DO YOUR BIT TO REDUCE THE SPREAD OF CORONAVIRUS.

What to do if you are in the Region of Murcia and believe you may have contracted the virus
The regional government has set up a special helpline to supply information to members of the public (900 121212) if they suspect that they may have contracted the virus rather than going straight to hospital or to a medical centre.
Sensible precautions
The advice being issued to members of the public by medical authorities all over the world coincides on the following points:
- Wash hands frequently with either soap and water or a sanitiser gel
- Catch coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues – and throw the tissues away immediately after use before immediately washing your hands!
- If you don’t have a tissue, use your sleeve – and wash the item of clothing used at the next opportunity
- AVOID touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
- AVOID close contact with people who are unwell
- Don´t panic!
