ARCHIVED - 15 of 25 coronavirus victims in Murcia so far are residents of homes for the elderly
Many of the most lethal outbreaks in Spain have been in homes for the elderly
Speculation is growing in Spain that one of the necessary long-term consequences of the current coronavirus emergency will be a complete overhaul in the field of care for the elderly, with many of the most shocking episodes of infection having caused multiple deaths in residences across the country, and the latest figures in the Region of Murcia underline the shortcomings which have been exposed in the sector over the last couple of weeks.
As of Monday morning 142 of the 939 patients to have tested positive for Covid-19 in the Region have been residents of homes for the elderly, and the same population group has accounted for 60 per cent of the fatalities caused by the virus (15 out of 25). Manuel Villegas, the minister for health in the Murcia government, has recognized that the situation is a “delicate” one and states that all steps possible are being taken to protect both residents and staff, while at the same time the decision has been made to allow residents at the Caser centre in Santo Ángel (where more cases and deaths have been reported than at any other residence in Murcia) to leave and stay with relatives if they test negative.
Of the 142 people to have tested positive in residences 42 are staff, and ten centres are being monitored closely by the regional authorities in the light of the recent surge in cases. In time, the SMS regional health service will intervene in all of the centres where infection is suspected or confirmed, and has been empowered to re-locate and isolate residents as well as to re-deploy staff as required.
On Saturday the Military Emergencies Unit (UME) disinfected the centre for the disabled in Churra, just outside the city of Murcia, but the task of doing so in all of the homes for the elderly is a huge one. The Social Services department of the regional government oversees a total of 55 centres, which are used by over 3,400 people, while a further 53 centres and staffed residential properties care for 1,634 disabled people.
390,000 residents in 6,000 homes for the elderly across Sapin
In Spain as a whole, meanwhile, it was reported last Thursday that approximately a third of the Covid-19 fatalities related to the residents of homes for the elderly, with 855 of the 1,307 deaths in this category having been reported in Madrid. The figures continue to rise so rapidly that these figures are now out of date – the total of fatalities has risen from 4,089 to 7,340 in the intervening four days – and whereas on Thursday only one such case had been confirmed in the Region of Murcia there have been 14 more since.
Across the country there are approximately 390,000 residents in 6,000 homes, and so far over 500 members of staff are known to have tested positive. The UME has carried out disinfection duties at only 300 or so establishments, and the lack of testing kits has meant that in many there is little or no information regarding possible infections.
Remember: LOCKDOWN MEANS LOCKDOWN. STAY AT HOME. STAY SAFE AND DO YOUR BIT TO REDUCE THE SPREAD OF CORONAVIRUS.

What to do if you are in the Region of Murcia and believe you may have contracted the virus
The regional government has set up a special helpline to supply information to members of the public (900 121212) if they suspect that they may have contracted the virus rather than going straight to hospital or to a medical centre.
Sensible precautions
The advice being issued to members of the public by medical authorities all over the world coincides on the following points:
- Wash hands frequently with either soap and water or a sanitiser gel
- Catch coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues – and throw the tissues away immediately after use before immediately washing your hands!
- If you don’t have a tissue, use your sleeve – and wash the item of clothing used at the next opportunity
- AVOID touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
- AVOID close contact with people who are unwell
- Don´t panic!
