ARCHIVED - 15th to 24th November, Fiestas of San Clemente 2019 in Lorca
Parades and a medieval market mark the fiestas which have developed in Lorca since the 13th century
Photographic images: Asociación Juveníl San Clemente
The official programme for the fiestas in Lorca in honour of San Clemente, the patron saint of the city, lasts this year from 16th to 25th November and include various parades (one of them themed on the Middle Ages), a medieval market and opportunities to visit the recently restored and renovated church of Santa María.
The medieval parade features variety of animals including horses, dromedaries and geese as well as almost 1,000 human participants, and at its head is usually a spectacle featuring live music and fire juggling, as the costumed Christians, Moors and Jews progress through the city.
At the same time, the medieval market this year runs from 22nd to 24th November, the second day coinciding with the feast day of the patron saint.
The association of San Clemente, the fourth Pope in the history of the Catholic church after Saint Peter, Saint Linus and Saint Anacletus, with the city of Lorca goes back to the 13th century, when the city council decided to celebrate the saint’s feast day at the same time as the birthday of King Alfonso X “El Sabio”. Alfonso ruled over Murcia after the area had been reconquered from the Moors in 1243, and the presence of Christians, Moors and Jews in the fiestas is a reference to the three main cultures which cohabited side by side in Lorca between the Moorish invasion in 713 and the year 1488: the latter date is just four years before the definitive expulsion of the Moors and Jews from the whole of Spain.
During the years between 1243 and 1492 Lorca was a frontier city between Christian and Moorish territories, and Lorca castle was a vital element in the defence of Christian territory.
Full information in English about visiting the city of Lorca can be found at Lorca Today.
