Sierra Espuña: This vast forested area offers many opportunities to enjoy walking, pic-nics and the open-air and lies just inland from the town itself. There is a central visitor's centre, the Centro de Visitantes Ricardo Codorniu, which offers maps, and general information about the flora and fauna, as well as several picnic and rest areas with restaurants. Within the park area are the pedanías of El Berro and Gebas, two attractive villages, which offer multiple options for camping, overnight accommodation, restaurants and exploring the Sierra Espuña.

The Sierra Espuña is also home to the Mariposa Hotel which offers organised trips and activities for walking, cycling, kayaking, quad biking and clay pigeon shooting. Click Mariposa

The tourist office in Alhama de Murcia and the visitor's centre can both provide suggested walking routes and further information.

This has been designed as a family-orientated activity which can be enjoyed at your own leisure and own pace and follows a circular walking route through the area close to the visitor centre covering a distance of 2.3 kilometres.

This is the walking, or senderismo route numbered SL-MU-1 and is well signposted on forest paths.
During the walk participants are asked to photograph ten key elements which can be seen along the course of the route and at the conclusion of the route are offered a small gift by the visitor centre once photographic proof has been shown that the 2.3 kilometer distance has been completed.

No prior registration is required for this activity.

The Ricardo Codorniú visitors centre is open from Tuesday to Saturday between 9.00 and 14.00 and from 15.00 to 17.30, and on Sundays from 9.00 to 15.00 only. 11:00 Guided visit to Alhama de Murcia castle, with Spansih language commentary. From time to time this visit is offered in English, although is highly visual and the joy of this visit is the fantastic view of the town below and climbing up into the castle tower!
