ARCHIVED - 19 deaths as hospitalisations pass 1,000; Murcia region Covid Friday 22nd
1,398 new cases were notified within the last 24 hour period
Yet again, the Region of Murcia has reported a day of breaking records in this coronavirus pandemic, but unfortunately these are not records which any health authority will be particularly proud to hold, as the numbers of deaths and hospitalisations both hit record highs.
Fatalities: 19 people have died within the last 24 hours directly from Covid-19; eleven females and one male, aged 90, 94, 85, 68, 82, 80, 54, 54, 86, 85, 88, 73, 85, 62, 75, 83, 82, 73 and 74, 4 from Cartagena, 3 from Murcia, 2 from Fortuna and the remainder from Mula, Alhama, Lorca, Totana, Yecla, Cieza, Alcantarilla, Torres Cotillas, Alguazas and Fuente Alamo. This record daily total takes the overall fatalities count to 887.
Remember, only 50 people died in the whole of the first wave in the Region of Murcia, and so 837 of these fatalities have occurred in the period from 9th August onwards.
New cases: The total number of new cases detected in the last 24 hours was 1,398, which is lower than the levels being reported towards the end of last week, but is still very high: 551 of the new cases correspond to the municipality of Murcia, 116 to Cartagena, 72 to Yecla, 65 to Molina de Segura, 57 to Lorca, 40 to Cieza, 36 to Jumilla, 35 to Torre Pacheco, 32 to Caravaca de la Cruz , 27 to Mula, 24 to Alcantarilla, 24 to Fortuna, 24 to San Javier, 23 to San Pedro del Pinatar, 22 to Cehegín, 19 to Abarán, 18 to Las Torres de Cotillas, 17 to Moratalla, 16 to Mazarrón, 15 to Archena, 15 to Santomera, 14 to Ceutí, 14 to Totana, 11 to Bullas, 10 to Alguazas, 10 to Calasparra, 9 to Los Alcázares, 8 to Águilas, 8 to Alhama de Murcia, 8 to Beniel, 8 to Fuente Álamo, and 6 to Abanilla.
This latest batch of new cases takes the number of active cases in the region to 18,329, a slight fall against the previous day as patients with mild cases are also recovering on a daily basis.
Hospital admissions:
It’s imposible for this level of new cases not to generate further hospitalisations, and ultimately, deaths, and the number of patients admitted to hospital with more severe symptoms has now risen to 1,041 with 142 in intensive care. The region is now using areas not usually available for intensive care as the absolute maximum is 122 ICU beds. Patients are being diverted from hospitals such as the Rafael Méndez in Lorca which is completely full.
The health service has continued to warn that the high number of cases would lead to this situation and the regional government is desperate to bring down the number of new contagions in order to ease the pressure on the region’s hospitals in the coming weeks, hence the current restrictions. As it generally takes anywhere from one to two weeks for those patients who are susceptible to the more extreme aspects of Covid -19 to require hospital treatment once they have become infected, the health service are naturally worried that there will be a further increase in hospital admissions as we move into the period habitually associated with winter respiratory problems.
AI Rate; rate per 100,000 head of population
It’s unavoidable with this level of contagions, that the accumulated incidence rate in the region would not be high and today we have a rate of 776 over 7 days and 1584 over 14 days for the region, just 5 points higher than yesterday.
The list is headed up by Moratalla with 3,967 cases per 100,000, Yecla 3,917, Albudeite 3,787, Fortuna 3,372, Mula 3,234, Caravaca 3,051 and even the lowest on the list are Librilla 320, Puerto Lumbreras at 610, Mazarrón at 620 and Totana at 643.
Nationally, Murcia had the second highest level in Spain, second only to Extremadura , as of yesterday (figure for today not yet released).
Vaccinations:
As of Thursday evening, the total number of vaccinations administered was 43,559, which represents 93.9% of the vaccinations delivered to the region to date. Of these, 40,497 first doses have been administered and 3,062 second. The total population of the region is 1,493,898.
