The patron saint of animals, San Antón is honoured in a charity day full of animal activities
The annual solidarity dog walk and dog day held at Lorca castle in honour of the patron saint of animals, San Antonio Abad (Saint Anthony the Great), is taking place for the seventh consecutive year on Sunday 19th January 2020.
All money raised is donated to local charities which help neglected and unwanted animals as well as undertaking educational activities to raise awareness of animal maltreatment and prevention.
A wide range of animal-related activities are taking place within the grounds of Lorca castle, starting at 10.30 with the distribution of numbers to all those participating in the walk (the “ruta canina”), departing from the Parque de San José in the town below, and heading up to the castle at 11.00.
In the castle itself, the activities begin at 12:00 with chocolate and cakes for all attendees, followed by a number of animal-related activities including a demonstration of canine rescue by the rescue and salvage services at 12.30, another demonstration by the canine unit of the Lorca police at 13.00, the traditional blessing of the animals present at 13.30, music, a prize draw for all participants at 14.00 and lunch at 14.30.
The day is scheduled to end at 17.30.
The cost of registration is only 6 euros, including a plate of warming migas at lunchtime and a drink, with all money raised going to a good cause. Tickets can be pre-booked or pay on entry to the castle.
For those interested in exploring the castle further there is the opportunity to join one of the guided tours visiting different themed areas within the castle. Although entry to the event includes a general entry to the castle, some areas can only be visited with a guide and those taking part can join in with the optional tours on offer for an additional fee.
These are: guided visit to the archaeological park and synagogue at 11:30, 13:30 and 16:30, while the visits to the Alfonsine Tower are at 12:30 and 17:30. At 12:30 there is also a guided family tour in Spanish, “En busca del tesoro””.
English speaking visitors who wish to visit one of the closed areas can use the English language guided audio tour.
Lorca Castle is a dog friendly tourist attraction and well-behaved dogs are welcome to visit the castle throughout the year with their owners.
