ARCHIVED - 1st December; 8,257 new cases of coronavirus and 442 deaths in Spain
ARCHIVED ARTICLE
This is the first time the daily rate has fallen below 10,000 since October 13th
The month of December began in a very similar way to the end of November; the data relating to new coronavirus contagions showing a steady fall in Spain, but with high fatality figures that refuse to fall as quickly as the authorities would like them to.
This Tuesday, the Ministry of Health has reported 8,257 new confirmed cases of coronavirus, the first time that daily cases have fallen below 10,000 in more than a month and a half. The last time the daily figure fell below 10,000 was on Tuesday, October 13th, when 7,118 cases were recorded (although this was the day after a public holiday when PCR tests were at an absolute minimum, thus clearly influencing the figure). To find a day lower than this figure of the 1st December which is not influenced by a holiday it is necessary to go as far back as September 1st, when 8,115 positives were reported. At that point the second wave had begun and figures started a determined upward march.
This 1st December data, however, is a much lower figure than the 12,228 reported on the same day last week and follows a gradual downward path which is very welcome as we head towards the Bank Holiday weekend. This latest data brings the total number of cases diagnosed in Spain since the pandemic began to 1,656,444.
AI rate:
These latest figures change the accumulated incidence rate over 14 days to 265 per 100,000 inhabitants, compared to 275 yesterday and 362 last Tuesday.
Fatalities:
Unfortunately, the 442 deaths reported on Tuesday make this the second worst Tuesday of the entire second wave, only surpassed by that of last week, when 537 deaths were recorded. The number of people who die every day from Covid-19 in Spain has been over 250 for more than three weeks, taking the official total to 45,511, although the MoMo reports that the number of unexpected deaths from all causes that have occurred during the two waves of Covid actually take the unofficial death count to 66,635.
This Tuesday has been especially black in Andalusia, which has reported 80 deaths in a single day, triple that of the previous day.
Hospitalisations:
For the last two weeks in a row both the number of patients admitted for Covid to acute beds and to intensive care ICU units has fallen, and this Tuesday is no exception. According to data from this Tuesday, there are currently 14,243 patients hospitalized across Spain with more acute covid cases (260 less than on Monday), giving an average occupation of 11.5% of the beds. In ICUs, the number of seriously ill patients has fallen to 2,578 (51 less than on Monday), which represents an average occupation of 26.3%.
Only Andalusia, Cantabria, Murcia, the Balearic Islands, the Canary Islands and Galicia have less than 25% ICU occupancy. Four regions are still considered to be at maximum risk according to the traffic light system used by the national Ministry of Health; La Rioja, Asturias, the Basque Country and the provinces of Valladolid, Palencia, Soria, Burgos and León in Castilla y León; another 11 remain at a high level, Galicia is at a "medium" level and only the Canary Islands are at a "low" level.
