The Coronavirus pandemic is accelerating in Spain and the latest set of figures published for the Region of Murcia on Wednesday, pertaining to the Tuesday data, show the rapid acceleration of the virus in this third wave.
2,072 new cases were diagnosed within the latest 24 hour period, the 10,858 PCR and antigen tests, giving a positivity rate of 19.06%, slightly lower when compared to the previous day's figure (21.9%) but well above the 5 % recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the rest of the health authorities to consider the pandemic under control.
It’s a worrying situation and as a result the Covid Monitoring Committee is holding an additional emergency meeting this evening to discuss the evolution of the situation.
Of the 2,072 new cases, 687, almost a third, correspond to the municipality of Murcia and Murcia city, 238 to Cartagena, 145 to Yecla, 118 to Molina de Segura, 94 to Caravaca de la Cruz, 83 to Lorca, 61 to Cieza, 47 to Alcantarilla, 44 to Jumilla, 44 to Mula, 35 to Las Torres de Cotillas, 33 to San Pedro del Pinatar, 30 to Moratalla, 28 to San Javier, 27 to Alguazas, 27 to Lorquí, 25 to La Unión, 23 to Águilas, 23 to Bullas, 23 to Torre Pacheco, 22 to Ceutí, 18 to Cehegín, 17 to Fortuna, 17 to Mazarrón, 16 to Abarán, 16 to Alhama de Murcia, 13 to Archena, 13 to Fuente Álamo, 12 to Calasparra, 10 to Puerto Lumbreras, 10 to Santomera , 9 to Abanilla, 9 to Totana, 8 to Los Alcázares, and 8 to Blanca. The remainder are distributed amongst the remaining municipalities in lesser quantities.
Fatalities: there have been two deaths in the last 24 hours, one male and one female, aged 90 and 83, from Alguazas and Villanueva del Río Segura. This brings the total fatalities to date up to 792.
Hospitalisations:
The biggest fear of the health authorities is that the health services could be overwhelmed once these new cases start turning into patients requiring hospitalisation. The two principal hospitals in Murcia City have already filled all available ICU beds and are converting other facilities into ICU units in anticipation of a surge in new admissions. All non-urgent operations were cancelled in the region yesterday in order to free up resources and facilities for the anticipated surge in new admissions.
Yesterday 80 patients were admitted to hospital, a huge surge for the region, bringing the total number of patients to 539. Of these, 92 are in the intensive care units, and there are a further 11,370 patients in home isolation with mild symptoms.
Vaccinations:
A total of 20,984 vaccinations have been administered in the Región de Murcia, and a further 3,853 people are scheduled to be vaccinated on Wednesday.
