The total number of active cases has risen to 2,229
During the last 7 days the number of active Covid-19 cases in the Region of Murcia has risen by 723 from 1506 active cases on Monday 17th to 2,229 on 24th August.
On Sunday 23rd August the Region of Murcia recorded its highest number to date of new Covid cases with 259, and on Monday 24th the total was also over 200 at 221.
The figures published on Monday relate to Sunday, but are always referred to as the “Monday figures”.
This brings the total of cases diagnosed since the pandemic began to 6,610, with 4,904 diagnosed using PCR swab tests and 1706 using rapid antibody testers.
Only those diagnosed by PCR are included in the daily Spanish national totals and only PCR cases can be classified as “cured”, so the total number of those “cured” has gone up to 2519. The 1796 antibody positives can also be said to be cured as they no longer show any symptoms, but are not automatically diagnosed as cured as some of them may still be contagious and asymptomatic.
A PCR test is not taken should a rapid test show the presence of antibodies.
On Sunday the regional health authority carried out 1,952 swab tests, the lowest figure for several days, a normal situation on a Sunday.
There are now 2,109 patients with mild symptoms in domestic quarantine for 14 days, monitored by phone, and 120 hospitalized, 19 of whom are in intensive care.
During his presentation today the regional Minister of Health, Manuel Villegas, said that the average age of those hospitalized is 50.
“In recent weeks it has been found that cases generally occur in young people. 30% of those infected are between 15 and 28 years old, and 38% between 30 and 49 years old, "explained the Health Minister. In other words, 68% of the new cases detected are in those under the age of 50.
However, the more serious cases and deaths tend to occur in those aged over 65 and on Monday special measures were announced to try and shield this more vulnerable group, with visits suspended to care homes in the municipalities of Fuente Álamo and Abarán, where cases are growing at a higher rate than in other areas.
The regional government also announced other measures, including limiting the maximum number of people who can gather in a group to 6, if those concerned come from more than one household. Click for further details.
