28 more beds being prepared in Rosell Hospital due to rising Covid-19 cases

On Wednesday both Murcia and Spain reported the highest new cases in a single day of the pandemic so far

The Ministry of Health is preparing the progressive opening of 28 more beds on the first floor of the Santa María del Rosell University Hospital to respond to the rapid increase in COVID-19 patients within the Cartagena health area (this area incorporates the large Cartagena municipality and other areas such as Mazarrón).

The same number of beds have already been prepared on the second floor of the hospital complex within the Contingency Plan of the Cartagena University Hospital Complex, and on Thursday morning, had 22 admissions.

The Hospital del Rosell has also reinforced the resources in medical personnel with additional personnel for the Intensive Medicine service and another for the Internal Medicine service to expand the current healthcare coverage.

A further 16 booths have been put into operation in the Advanced Semicritics Unit run by the Intensive Medicine service of the Cartagena Health Area to support the high number of critical patients, which today had 12 positive COVID patients.

This additional Unit has required an investment of 1.1 million euros in 2020 and the hiring of 97 professionals who are part of the 200 workers in total that have joined the hospital complex in 2019 and 2020 to cope with the demands caused by the pandemic.

A further 32 beds in the same hospital can be brought into operation within the same contingency plan if required.
