Lorca contains the only synagogue never to have been re-used by another religion following the expulsion of the Jews and Moors from Spain in 1492 when the fall of the Nazrid dynasty in Granada concluded the “Reconquist” of Spain and the country was united for the first time.
The synagogue in Lorca has been fully excavated and is conserved beneath the Parador hotel and within the protective shadow of the castle, open for visits via the castle, the precious glass lamps and other artefacts recovered from its ruins now on show in the municipal archaeological museum.
