Lorca was an important mediaeval frontier town, straddling the border between Moorish Andalucía and Christian Murcia, the Jewish community of Lorca an important link between the two communities and the trading routes which ran along the Spanish coastline.
Lorca contains the only synagogue never to have been re-used by another religion following the expulsion of the Jews and Moors from Spain in 1492 when the fall of the Nazrid dynasty in Granada concluded the “Reconquist” of Spain and the coutry was united for the first time.
This guided tour, entitled, “Lorca Sefardí: Ayer y Hoy” visits the municipal archaeological museum to see the important remains recovered from the synagogue excavation and also visits two of the embroidery museums dedicated to the extraordinary embroideries of the Semana Santa in Lorca, those of the Paso Blanco and Paso Azul to see the embroideries produced which relate to Jewish biblical passages and the representations of these sections in the lorquian Semana Santa.
