ARCHIVED - 30 year old among 22 deaths on worst day of pandemic so far in Murcia
The number of hospitalizations increased by 63 people in one day
The Covid data for Tuesday 26th January reinforced the decisions taken by the regional health authority in Murcia to tighten restrictions even further in the worst-affected municipalities this week and focus the resources of the health service into fighting the pandemic.
On Tuesday the Region reported its highest ever daily total of coronavirus fatalities since the pandemic began, with 22 deaths.
Although the fatalities tend to be amongst the older members of the population, among them on this occasion was a 30-year-old female, described as having previous pathologies.
The 14 men and 8 women were aged 93, 84, 80, 72, 80, 30, 88, 84, 94, 86, 90, 85, 58, 99, 90, 86, 84, 81, 79, 79, 61 and 88 years old, 6 from Cartagena, 5 from Murcia, 4 from Molina de Segura and the remainder from Calasparra, Mula, Abanilla, Mazarron, La Union, Archena and Las Torres de Cotillas. These latest fatalities bring the total number of deaths from the virus in the Region of Murcia to 959.
Images show new cases (top) by day and hospitalisations (below)
New cases: 1,279 new cases were diagnosed from 9,075 PCR tests during this same 24 hour period; 430 correspond to the municipality of Murcia, 189 to Cartagena, 64 to Yecla, 61 to Molina de Segura, 52 to Lorca, 43 to Cieza, 42 to Mula, 37 to Torre Pacheco, 30 to Alcantarilla, 28 to San Pedro del Pinatar, 24 to Caravaca de la Cruz, 23 to San Javier, 22 to Mazarrón, 19 to Las Torres de Cotillas, 18 to Ceutí, 17 to Cehegín, 16 to Jumilla, 14 to Beniel, 12 to Águilas, 12 to Archena, 11 to Alhama, 11 to Bullas, 11 to Moratalla, 11 to La Unión, 9 to Abarán, 7 to Alguazas, 6 to Fortuna, 6 to Fuente Álamo, 6 to Santomera, 6 to Totana, 5 to Abanilla, and 5 to Lorquí, with the remainder distributed in smaller quantities around the region.
These latest additions are however, lower than the number of recoveries during this same period, so the number of active cases has reduced to 16,233.
Hospitalisations:
Unfortunately, although the total of new cases is lower than last week, the number of patients requiring hospital treatment for more severe cases continues to increase.
In the last 24 hour period a further 63 patients have been admitted to hospital, bringing the total up to 1,136, another record high.
In spite of 22 deaths, the number in intensive care increased by a further 4 patients to 162.
This leaves 15,097 patients with mild symptoms or asymptomatic patients with no symptoms at home in quarantine. In the last couple of days the health authority has issued a reminder that almost 40% of all cases detected by PCR are asymptomatic, but patients are still infectious, and could infect somebody more susceptible to the virus and kill them, so must maintain isolation at home until given the all-clear.
Data at a glance as reported on Tuesday:
New positive cases reported in the last 24 hours: 1,279
Confirmed cases since the beginning of the outbreak; 91,238
Total number of active cases: 16,233
Patients in home isolation with mild symptoms: 15,097
Total number of hospitalisations: 1,136 (+63)
Total number in ICU intensive care units : 162 (+4)
Total cured: 74,046
Total deaths: 959 (+22)
Testing: total of 767,848 PCR and antigen tests and 89,747 serological tests to date
AI Rate:The 14-day rate in the Region is now 1,523, more than six times the level considered to be extreme risk, and the 7-day rate is 670. This shows that the number of new cases is lower in the last 7 days than it was in the preceding 7 day period, but both rates are more than 20 times higher than the target level to bring the virus under control, which is 25 for 7 days and 60 for 14.
Worst affected over 14 days is Yecla, with a rate of 4,057 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, a worryingly high rate. Campos del Río, home to a large prison, tops the 7-day rate due to a major outbreak, with dozens of staff and prisoners positive.
The figure which is most worrying of all is the rate for the city of Murcia, which is now among the highest in the Region, simply because the capital is home to a third of the whole of the population of the Region.
Over 7 days the capital has reported 3,373 cases and during the last 14 has notched up 7,529 cases.
