ARCHIVED - 35 new covid cases in Murcia during the last three days
The figures have reached a level not seen since 3rd June

Friday 10th July: 79 active cases, 61 in home isolation, 18 in hospital, 2 in intensive care, 151 dead
Sunday12th July: 98 active cases, 76 in home isolation,22 in hospital,2 in intensive care, 151 dead
The figures say it all; a worrying trend upward which has started to intensify in the last few days, bringing the covid figures back up to a point last reached on June 3rd, the increase of 21 new cases on Sunday adding to the 8 cases on Saturday and the 6 on Friday.
Most of the cases are mild, or even asymptomatic, but four were serious enough for the patients to be admitted to hospital and one to intensive care.
Patients are recovering; it’s been reported that on Saturday a 49 year old man left intensive care after 2 months on a ventilator and has finally been moved down to a general ward to continue his recovery, although his place was taken by another seriously ill patient on Sunday so the figures remain the same at 2 in intensive care; in total 1,516 people who tested positive using the PCR swab test system have now recovered.
Murcia has now recorded 3,447 cases since the pandemic first began, but this latest batch of positives is setting alarm bells ringing as the new cases are widely dispersed and several of them apparently unlinked to other cases.
The “Bolivian outbreak” which stemmed from three passengers who came back from Bolivia on June 3rd via Barajas airport in Madrid now reaches 60 cases. 17 of them amongst staff from the Fruveco frozen vegetable plant in El Raal on the outskirts of Murcia, and although the plant has been closed since the outbreak was first detected, the cases continue to come to light as the virus contaminates family members within the domestic circles of the positive employees and of course, their close contacts. There are also nine cases which stemmed from this same out break in the outlying district of Cañada de la Cruz which lies in the Moratalla municipality in the north-west of the region. At the weekend the health service PCR tested the whole village, to check that there were no further contagious individuals in the community to try and quash this outbreak. One 98 year old resident became the 151st victim of the pandemic in this little community.
But it’s the other cases that are worrying the authorities, hence the decision to make the wearing of masks in all public spaces mandatory from Monday.
On Friday one of the University of Murcia buildings was closed; the edificio Rector Soler de la Universidad de Murcia, following the detection of a positive case amongst the staff; the building is being thoroughly disinfected and tracing work is underway to try and identify where the contact could have come from.
The Tesorería General de la Seguridad Social building in Murcia is also closed on Monday as this building is disinfected and again, attempts made to identify where the positive contact came from in this case. Co-workers will be tested and the building will only re-open once the disinfection has been completed.
Other cases have been detected in four other governmental departments in the city, none of them apparently linked to other known cases, and all in buildings in which many other functionaries work.
On Monday the national government is yet again meeting with the Covid advisory committee to discuss the topic of masks, and potentially other measures to try and halt the spread of the pandemic, with a view to potentially imposing a nationwide order on the wearing of masks.
Cataluña and the Balearic Islands were the first to make the decision and in the last few days the rapidly growing number of outbreaks across the country since the state of emergency concluded has prompted the regional governments of Andalucía, Extremadura, La Rioja, Navarra and Aragón to follow their lead. Asturias and Cantabria are also considering imposing their own bans as the number of outbreaks across the country continues to rise.
