ARCHIVED - 52,188 new cases of Covid in Spain over the weekend
ARCHIVED ARTICLE
The accumulated incidence rate has increased to 410 per 100,000
As if there weren´t already sufficient reasons for declaring a state of alarm, Spain generated a further 52,188 good reasons to follow the safety and hygiene measures given by the Ministry of Health over the weekend, PCR tests confirming a further 52,188 new cases of coronavirus, or 17,396 a day, to bring the total number of cases diagnosed to date in Spain to 1,098,320.
Last weekend during the same period “only” 37,889 additional positives were reported, so this weekend the number of cases has increased substantially.
The number of fatalities nationwide has also increased by 279 across the weekend, although case numbers are still a long way from the levels seen during the first wave (see graph above).
The director of the Center for the Coordination of Health Alerts and Emergencies, Fernando Simón said during his presentation of the figures that, "All European countries are going to face a wave perhaps greater than the one we are experiencing. As for the number of cases detected, it will be much higher." "We have to trust that the measures will have an impact on transmission."
But some regions aren´t taking any chances. Today Aragón became the first to fully close its perimeter borders to all but essential traffic, followed by Asturias and finally the Basque Country.
