ARCHIVED - 687 active coronavirus cases in Murcia as the death toll reaches 15
53 patients in intensive care as numbers rise sharply in the Costa Cálida
The nationwide data regarding the coronavirus pandemic in Spain which were released on Thursday lunchtime provided some grounds for hope (that's the official line although a little cynicism could be forgiven looking at the number of cases, see bottom of article for further information about the situation in Spain) that the upward curve in both cases and fatalities may be beginning to flatten out, but in the Region of Murcia, where the first case was reported later than in any other of Spain’s 17 regions, the numbers continue to rise sharply.
On Thursday 26th March at 21.00 the regional health service (SMS) and the Murcia government reported that during the day the number of confirmed Covid-19 cases had risen from 586 to 699. This represents an increase of around 20 per cent as opposed to 25 per cent the previous day, and in one sense the current total of active cases can be reduced by the 12 patients who have been given the a—clear, but at the same time the number of people admitted to hospital rose from 172 to 209.
In addition, there are now 53 Covid-19 patients in intensive care in Murcia (as opposed to 36 on Wednesday evening) and the number of fatalities rose to 15 during the day, the most recent victims including an 82-year-old woman and a 77-year-old man who passed away at the Virgen del Castillo hospital in Yecla during the day.
Equally worrying, if not more so, is that as many as 23 per cent of the cases confirmed in the Region of Murcia relate to healthcare and medical professionals. 137 of these key workers have tested positive for Covid-19, and when the 400 or so others who have been placed in quarantine are taken into account it means that around 2.5 per cent of the entire SMS workforce is currently out of action just at the time when they are most needed.
This figure of 23 per cent may be distorted by the fact that health and medical workers are being prioritized when it comes to testing, but even so it appears that more staff may have to be taken on during the next few weeks as the emergency continues. The lack of resource was highlighted earlier in the week when the regional government revealed that there are more than 7,500 suspected cases in the region which it has not been possible to test yet due to a lack of testing kits. All of these individuals are suspected to be positive and are being monitored via telephone contact, although they are not officially confirmed cases, highlighting the spread of the virus and reinforcing the need to respect the lockdown.
The curve steepens in Murcia
Although the figures in Murcia have risen sharply they are still very low in comparison to other areas of Spain, but with the upward curve steepening the Arrixaca hospital in El Palmar has created beds for 44 more adults in the area usually reserved for children, while at the Morales Meseguer hospital in central Murcia patients are to be housed in operating theatres which are currently not being used for their usual purpose.
In anticipation of further increases, plans to create an overflow field hospital outside the Arrixaca are advancing in collaboration with the armed forces, while various hotels are preparing to welcome health workers and other emergency services staff all over the Region.
As a result of the strict confinement of members of the public to their homes throughout the country it is hoped that the spread of the virus can be contained, but the regional health authority is under no illusions that many cases have yet to show symptoms and it will probably be some time before a peak in case numbers is reached in Murcia.
Situation across Spain
The latest official figures produced by the Spanish government show that the number of confirmed cases of Covid-19 throughout the country has risen from 47,610 to 56,188 by Thursday lunchtime, with the number of related fatalities having reached 4,098 after an increase of 655 in the last 24 hours.
Another 3,679 patients were in intensive care (513 more than on Wednesday) among almost 32,000 in hospital, but on the other hand the number of patients given the all-clear has increased by around 1,800 to 7,015.
The next figures will be released on Friday lunchtime.

What to do if you are in the Region of Murcia and believe you may have contracted the virus
The regional government has set up a special helpline to supply information to members of the public (900 121212) if they suspect that they may have contracted the virus rather than going straight to hospital or to a medical centre.
Sensible precautions
The advice being issued to members of the public by medical authorities all over the world coincides on the following points:
- Wash hands frequently with either soap and water or a sanitiser gel
- Catch coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues – and throw the tissues away immediately after use before immediately washing your hands!
- If you don’t have a tissue, use your sleeve – and wash the item of clothing used at the next opportunity
- AVOID touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
- AVOID close contact with people who are unwell
- Don´t panic!
