ARCHIVED - 6th April coronavirus update in Spain: 637 new deaths but the figure is the lowest in two weeks
Signs of a flattening of the upward curve in the number of active Covid-19 cases
The latest figures made public on 6th April show that there have now been 135,032 cases of the coronavirus confirmed in Spain, following a rise of 4,273 in the last 24 hours. This is the smallest increase in the national total since a fortnight ago while at the same time another 637 fatalities were reported on Monday morning: still a shocking figure, but for three days now the national totals have been well below the 900-plus which were added to the total (now 13,055) on Thursday and Friday, and again the latest figure is the lowest since 24th March.
In addition, the number of patients to have made a full recovery now stands at 40,437, while just 70 more admissions to intensive care were made during the 24 hours prior to the latest update.
With tester kits now starting to reach the 17 regional health authorities there is a likelihood of a sudden spurt in the number of confirmed cases over the coming days, but at the same time there is hope that the virus is starting to be contained in this country.
Nonetheless, it goes without saying that one day’s statistics could completely cancel out any optimism, and any complacency regarding the lockdown must not be contemplated, hence the decision of the Prime Minister on Saturday to extend the State of Emergency lockdown until 26th April.
The latest regional breakdown of the cases reported in the national figures on Monday morning is as follows
Andalucía: 8,581 (491fatalities, 489 admitted to intensive care (including those since discharged), 798 recoveries)
Aragón: 3,347 (287 fatalities, 237 admitted to intensive care, 565 recoveries)
Asturias: 1,646 (86 fatalities, 90 admitted to intensive care, 222 recoveries)
Balearic Islands: 1,320 (81 fatalities, 121 admitted to intensive care, 531 recoveries)
Canary Islands: 1,649 (85 fatalities, 133 admitted to intensive care, 157 recoveries)
Cantabria: 1,483 (77 fatalities, 65 admitted to intensive care, 118 recoveries)
Castilla-La Mancha: 10,602 (1,132 fatalities, 354 still in intensive care, 1,259 recoveries)
Castilla y León: 9,116 (919 fatalities, 348 still in intensive care, 2,533 recoveries)
Catalunya: 26,824 (2,760 fatalities, 2,276 admitted to intensive care, 10,088 recoveries)
Ceuta: 83 (3 fatalities, 4 admitted to intensive care, 2 recoveries)
Comunidad Valenciana: 7,334 (637 fatalities, 384 still 379 in intensive care, 930 recoveries)

Navarra: 3,231 (187 fatalities, 124 admitted to intensive care, 380 recoveries)

What to do if you are in the Region of Murcia and believe you may have contracted the virus
The regional government has set up a special helpline to supply information to members of the public (900 121212) if they suspect that they may have contracted the virus rather than going straight to hospital or to a medical centre.
Sensible precautions
The advice being issued to members of the public by medical authorities all over the world coincides on the following points:
- Wash hands frequently with either soap and water or a sanitiser gel
- Catch coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues – and throw the tissues away immediately after use before immediately washing your hands!
- If you don’t have a tissue, use your sleeve – and wash the item of clothing used at the next opportunity
- AVOID touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
- AVOID close contact with people who are unwell
- Don´t panic!
