ARCHIVED - 6th to 9th December, holiday weekend activities at the Roman Theatre Museum in Cartagena
Guided tours and enhanced reality goggles at the most visited museum in the Region of Murcia
Both Friday 6th and Sunday 8th December are national holidays in Spain, and with numerous visitors expected in Cartagena the Roman Theatre Museum – the most visited museum in the Region of Murcia – is holding a series of activities during the weekend.
On 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th December the museum extends its normal opening hours from 10.00 to 18.00, allowing visitors to enjoy the standard tour which begins in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento and proceeds through the display rooms to the Roman Theatre itself (including a large number of audio-visuals and information panels in English). In addition, at present there is an interesting exhibition of urban art by the artist Kraser to enjoy, with works showing a wide range of influences from classical, Renaissance and other styles.
But on top of that a series of special tours and events are taking place as follows. Please note, dialogue is in Spanish unless otherwise stated:
Friday 6th December
At 12.00 a dramatized tour for all the family begins at the museum and continues to other major Roman sites in Cartagena such as the Forum district on the Molinete hill and the Augusteum. Entitled “Romanos por el mundo: destino Carthago Nova” the tour is full of moments of humour as different characters from the Roman city of Carthago Nova provide insights into their daily lives, and registration is priced at 14 euros (7 euros for holders of the Club Cartagena Puerto de Culturas card).
Saturday 7th December
Another guided tour entitled “Cartagena: sabor tres culturas” begins at 11.30 at the panoramic lift and focuses on the co-existence of Moorish, Jewish and Christian cultures in Cartagena during the Early Middle Ages. The route includes the Castillo de la Concepción and passes the church of Santa María la Mayor on its way to the Roman Theatre Museum, where it ends with a typical “tapa” snack based on either Jewish or Moorish cuisine.
Registration for this tour costs 13 euros for adults, 10 euros for those entitled to reductions and 6.50 euros for holders of the Club Cartagena Puerto de Culturas card.
Sunday 8th December
On this occasion the guided tour is called “Ciudadanos de un Imperio” and begins at the Roman Theatre at 11.30. As participants learn more about the splendour of Carthago Nova they also visit the temple dedicated to the deities Isis and Serapis on the Molinete Hill and the Casa de la Fortuna.
Again, registration for this tour costs 13 euros for adults, 10 euros for those entitled to reductions and 6.50 euros for holders of the Club Cartagena Puerto de Culturas card.
In addition, on both Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th December visitors are invited to enjoy the enhanced reality tour, with special goggles allowing them to see the Roman theatre as it would have looked in its heyday 2,000 years ago. The goggles also offer a fly-through visit to the theatre during a visit which begins at 11.00.
These enhanced reality tours are also being held on 14th, 15th, 21st, 22nd, 26th and 28th December and on 4th and 5th January, with registration costing 10 euros,
Tickets for all of these tours can be purchased via the Museum or direct from the Puerto de Culturas organization.
