ARCHIVED - A LAMP test, TMA test or PCR test must be provided by UK residents travelling to Spain this Christmas
The British Government has confirmed that Spain is accepting LAMP tests as well as TMA and PCR tests
Spain currently considers the UK as a "high risk" country and any British nationals travelling to Spain must provide one of three tests taken with 72 hours before travelling to Spain by air or sea as proof that they are not Covid positive before they will be admitted to the country.
In practise, this is proving difficult for some residents to achieve, as private testing centres are expensive and not all centres are able to turn around the tests quickly enough for treavelelrs.
In other situations, it is proving difficult to find a local testing centre ( some UK residents are having to drive a considerable distance to find a testing centre) and in others even major providers such as Boots Pharmacists, are struggling to return the tests within the required timeframe.
And they're expensive; 120 pounds sterling seems to be an average price in most locations, so for a family of four travelling to Spain, this is a considerable amount of additional expenditure.
Aware of the problem, the Spanish Government is now permitting the use of a TMA or LAMP test, although many British residents have commented that they are finding it diccicult to obtain either test.
The British Government has amplified the information on its webpage and now gives the following information:
On arrival, travellers entering Spain from the UK will not be required to self-isolate. However, from 23 November, all passengers (excluding children under the age of 6 years old) travelling to Spanish airports and ports from ‘risk’ countries, as determined by the European Centre for Disease Prevention & Control are required to present a negative PCR swab test taken within no more than 72 hours prior to arrival, in order to enter the country.
From 10 December, a TMA (Transcription-Mediated Amplification) swab test or a LAMP (Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification) test are also accepted by Spanish authorities, again taken within no more than 72 hours prior to arrival. While TMA and LAMP tests are not currently widely available in the UK, you should refer to testing facilities directly for information on the types of tests available to you, prior to booking an appointment. The UK is currently on the ‘risk’ countries list and passengers arriving from the UK are therefore subject to this requirement.
You should not use the NHS testing service to get a test in order to facilitate your travel to another country. You should arrange to take a private test and should confirm with the testing facility the type of tests available prior to booking an appointment.
You will also be subject to the additional three requirements at the point of entry:
it is mandatory for all passengers travelling by air or sea to Spain to fill out and sign an online Health Control Form (CLICK HERE FOR ONLINE LINK ) 48 hours prior to travel, providing the Spanish Ministry of Health with:
contact information;
details of any known history of exposure to COVID-19; and
confirmation that you are able to provide evidence (electronically or hardcopy) that you have undertaken a PCR, TMA or LAMP test taken no more than 72 hours prior to arrival and have tested negative for COVID-19.
You can do this on the Spain Travel Health website or downloadable app. On completion, you will be issued a personal and non-transferable QR code which you must show (electronically or hardcopy) at airport health controls on arrival.
temperature check
undergo a visual health assessment
Overland travellers to Spain are exempt from the above mentioned entry requirements and are therefore not currently required to present a PCR or TMA test, or Health Control Form on entry by road or rail.
Other information:
All travellers returning to the UK are obliged to quarantine.
Local restrictions and measures are in place across Spain which could adversely affect your travel plans. Check local restrictions to avoid a local fine!
Canary Islands
If you’re travelling to the Canary Islands, local authorities have announced that a negative COVID-19 antigen test is also valid, as well as a PCR, TMA or LAMP test. You can find further information from the Canary Island Tourism Authority (CLICK HERE FOR LINK TO WEBPAGE) and check entry requirements with your travel provider prior to travel. Regulated tourist accommodation providers on the Canary Islands require all travellers aged 6 years and over, to present a negative COVID-19 test on check-in, taken no more than 72 hours prior to arrival. The same test used on entry to the Canary Islands may be used, providing you check-in within 72 hours of the test being taken.
Please note, those returning from the Canary Islands must now quarantine for 10 days.
