Águilas has forced the Town Hall to ramp up police surveillance and warn of fines for flouters of between 150 and 300 euros.
"In view of the increase in these uncivic actions, the Local Police will increase vigilance and will penalise anyone who throws rubbish, rubble or household items in places which are not authorised for this purpose," cautioned the local council in a statement.
It reminded that rubbish should be deposited in the containers provided, rubble should be taken to the Municipal Rubbish Dump (located on the Carretera de Los Arejos) and household goods and furniture should be taken to the Cleaning Company for removal.
Councillor for the area, Isabel Fernández, explained that "in a single day we can detect more than one hundred uncontrolled points where this type of waste is deposited; something that is totally unfeasible for the proper functioning of the service. The town cannot be kept in optimum conditions without the cooperation of all its citizens."
The Town Hall offers a home collection service for large items of household rubbish like sofas and armchairs. Simply call +34 968 493 319 and arrange a collection day to leave the used furniture in the street on the date indicated.
"The collection services will take charge of these items, which will then be given the appropriate treatment. This is a quick, easy and environmentally friendly procedure, which also complies with the law and can prevent us from having to face financial penalties," added Councillor Fernández.
