In an attempt to slow the surge in infections, the regional government has redoubled vaccination efforts, with the counsellor of the Presidency, Public Administration and Interior and Spokesperson of the Government, Elías Bendodo insisting that "the Government of Spain has nothing more important to do at this time than to guarantee the arrival of vaccines."
According to Mr Bendodo, “of the 102 people who have entered Andalucían hospitals this weekend, 64% were not vaccinated. Most of the new entrants, up to 40%, are under 40 years old and 85% of them were not vaccinated.”
Despite the insistence of ministers on the importance of the Covid jab, only 470,000 doses arrived in Andalucía this week, compared with 835,000 the previous week.
According to the latest data from the Ministry of Health, around 30 municipalities have now exceeded the rate of 1,000 cases in 14 days. More worrying is the rise in cases in popular tourist areas, such as Tarifa, which has reached a figure of 1,176.9 cases per 100,000 and Conil de la Frontera at 1,440.2 cases. Marbella is also creeping ever closer to the 1,000 threshold.
Despite the rise, the Junta de Andalucía on Wednesday decided against imposing perimeter restrictions or closing any non-essential businesses; however, the government is not ruling out these measures in the future. A government spokesperson warned that restrictive measures may be considered in municipalities where the cumulative incidence exceeds 1,000 when the Board next meets on July 21 "provided that the committee of experts recommends it."
