ARCHIVED ARTICLE
Despite a slight increase in newly diagnosed cases, the Spanish region of Andalucía (Andalusia in English) has seen its accumulated incidence rate drop to 143 per 100,000 inhabitants.
474 new coronavirus cases have been reported in the Andalusia region within the last 24 hour period, according to the latest daily figures from the Andalusian Statistics and Cartography Institute (IECA) released on Wednesday (3 March).
This figure is higher than the 359 new cases reported on Tuesday, which were the lowest the region had reported in a 24 hour period since August. However, it is still much lower than the 1,311 reported the previous Wednesday.
Málaga registered the most new cases with 127, with Seville a close second with 126. Almeria reported 63, Córdoba and Cádiz 48 each, Granada 38, Jaen 19 and Huelva 5.
The statistics also show that 69 people died over the 24 hour period, up from 24 on Tuesday but significantly less than the 93 reported on Wednesday last week.
Málaga was also the province to register the most deaths over the 24-hour period, with 18, followed by Seville and Almeria with 10 each, Cádiz 9, Córdoba 7, Huelva 6, Granada 5 and Jaen 4.
The 14-day accumulated incidence rate for the region as a whole has dropped to 143 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, down 18.3 from Tuesday’s 161.3 and down 92.11 from 235.11 on Wednesday last week.
The rate hasn’t been this low since 31 December 2020, when it reached 140.6 per 100,000 inhabitants, so is clear evidence that the region is finally overcoming the third wave of the pandemic.
Almería has the highest provincial rate with 250.6 cases per 100,000 of population, followed by Granada with 176.4, Seville with 139.4, Cádiz with 132.4, Málaga with 131.7, Córdoba with 114.8, Jaen with 112 and Huelva with 88.1.
The national target is 50 cases per 100,000 for the virus to be considered at a manageable level, so although the situation is improving considerably, there is still a long way to go in some provinces.
1,717 people were still admitted to hospitals across Andalusia with Covid-19 on Tuesday, two more than on Tuesday but 491 fewer than on Wednesday 24 February, so there has been a considerable easing of the pressure on the health system during the last week. Of the total, 410 people are in ICU intensive care units, 5 more than on Tuesday but 128 fewer than a week ago.
Andalusia has registered 476,922 confirmed cases of coronavirus and 8,539 deaths since the start of the pandemic. Altogether, 38,158 people have been hospitalised with the virus, and 3,784 of them were admitted to ICUs. The Health Ministry reports that 329,854 of the patients given a positive diagnosis have now fully recovered.
