Weekly Bulletin W/E 25th November 2012
This next week community events continue as we head towards Christmas…..Oh no we don´t…. oh yes we do….and oh yes, it’s pantomime season, so if you live in the Mar Menor, hurry up and get those tickets for the ADAPT version of Snow White and the seven ….guiris, yes, that’s us, sandals, sunburn and socks.
This week we start with the Festival of Saint Cecilia. This lady is the patron saint of music and musicians and each year the music schools throughout the region use it as an excuse to go out into the community , recruit new pupils and also perform the pieces they´ve been working on, so there are plenty of concerts dedicated to saint Cecilia throughout the next week. But who is she?
At the moment we have activities in Los Alcázares, Blanca, Caravaca de la Cruz, Murcia, Cartagena, Calasparra, Bullas, Totana, Alhama de Murcia, Lorca and Águilas. All can be found in What’s on or in their individual town sections in the map box at the bottom of every page.

This weekend there are artesan fairs in Alhama de Murcia, San Pedro del Pinatar and Caravaca de la Cruz, and Alhama also has guided visits to the town on the same day.
Águilas has the route of the railways on Sunday and there’s a family event in Murcia capital over the weekend which focuses on all things Japanese, with a huge variety of activities, workshops, interactive games and videogaming.
This weekend is the big weekend for those in the Mazarrón area, with the main weekend of the Fiestas del Milagro and the Romería of the Puríssima, better known locally as the Bolnuevo Sardine Festival, in which sardines are cooked on the beach following a healthy walk from Mazarrón to Bolnuevo.
The Fiestas of San Clemente also take place during the next week in Lorca, and there’s Bollywood magic in Murcia this week with Sunny Singh and Bollywood dance.

This next weekend Totana council are taking walkers over to the Cabezo Gordo in Torre Pacheco for a walk and this weekend Moratalla are re-running the walk in the Campo de San Juan which should have taken place last week, but was postponed due to the bad weather.
At least the rains will have perked up the golf courses, so if you fancy a game at the weekend you can play as much as you want for 10 euros at Sierra Golf or Hacienda del Álamo have their major club competition next weekend.

Finally the News
This week the news has been dominated by two subjects: protest and evictions, both hard topics, but which reflect the ongoing problems caused by over 25% unemployment in Spain.
The evictions situation has been ongoing for months, but has been highlighted this last week by another suicide, as a woman leapt from a 4th floor flat rather than face eviction. This has forced through a rapid re-evaluation of the situation and yesterday the government announced that evictions for those in serious situations would be paralysed temporarily.
Protests against evictions formed one of the more vocal elements of the General Strike which took place on Wednesday, with protests, marches and confrontation across the country. The unions describe participation as massive, whilst the councils locally said it was low, and there are totally contradictory sets of figures in between, as many chose not to lose a day’s wages and put themselves in the firing line for the next round of job cuts.
On the theme of job cuts, there is a developing situation in the Spanish air industry, Iberia facing 4500 layoffs to counter losses of 1.7 million euros a day, a reshuffle inevitable, but the Iberia pilots union are not showing any signs of reaching a compromise and are threatening to strike again.
But at least flu vaccines are starting to flow again as the Novartis flu vaccines are deemed to be safe and the vaccinations campaign resumes with new doses arriving in the region.
Don´t forget, local news stories are often posted in both the area sections, accessed via the tool bar at the top of every page, which break news and local information into “local editions” for the North-west, Mar Menor area, South-west area or Central Murcia and keep all the information local to within half an hour of where you live, and the town sections, accessed via the map box at the bottom of every page. Often these news stories don´t appear in the main news section, as they are deemed too “local” to be of general interest. All of the site is updated every day, so readers can keep up with news and what’s on daily by typing in www.murciatoday.com
