ARCHIVED - AntiCovid chewing gum to hit the market in Spain

‘Chewing Mask’ gum will be available in supermarkets in the Canary Islands next month
From February, a rather novel product will join the fight against coronavirus in Spain. The so-called ‘Chewing mask’ is the first gum that claims to prevent the transmission of Covid by neutralising between 75% and 99% of lipid layer viruses, a category to which illnesses like coronavirus and the flu belong.
Developed by a Barcelona-based company, the product has undergone 18 months of research in different labs in Spain, Great Britain and Germany and contains a mixture of three natural acids that reduce the PH level in the mouth, deactivating the virus. By chewing the gum around four times a day, its creators claim it is entirely possible to avoid contracting the virus.
But scientists insist that “it is not just an antiCovid gum”, since it destroys other types of viruses as well.
Initially, the company will sell close to 1.5 million Chewing Mask chewing gums both in supermarkets and shops in the Canary Islands, but plans are underway to market it in the rest of Spain before eventually launching it around the world. The product has a mint flavour and can be purchased for the bargain price of just two euros.
To verify the effectiveness of the Covid-preventing gum, various tests have been developed in a laboratory in Berlin, in which “the product was tested and it has also been repeatedly validated by the Autonomous University of Barcelona,” according to José Antonio González-Cuevas, who first thought up the idea. Furthermore, the tests “guarantee the safety of the compound both in human mucosa and in terms of dental erosion.”
However, its founders also warn that they have discarded the idea of starting to market this gum as a medicine, due to the lengthy steps for its approval. Even so, its creators comment that it is a quality preventive measure against the virus, although in no case will it replace vaccinations, mask-wearing and correct hand hygiene.
