Music by Lutoslawski, Bartok and Beethoven at the regional auditorium in Murcia

In the fifth event of their 2019-20 cycle of concerts at the Auditorio Víctor Villegas in the regional capital the Region of Murcia Symphony Orchestra (OSRM) perform under the baton of guest conductor Georg Mark, accompanying flautist Juan Antonio Nicolás and harpist José Antonio Domené.

On the programme are Beethoven’s Leonora nº 3 overture, Mozart’s concerto for flute and harp and Schumann’s 1^st symphony.

Juan Antonio Nicolás was born in Beniaján in the Region of Murcia and studied at the Conservatorio Superior de Música in the regional capital, specializing in the flute and in chamber music. In 2003 he was selected as the only Spanish artist at the Sir James Galway Master Class in Reggio Emilia (Italy).

He has been first flautist with the Murcia Youth Orchestra and the OSRM, having worked with conductors such as Odón Alonso, José Collado, Enrique García Asensio, Leo Brower and Tamas Vasâry and alongside musicians like Carlos Moreno, Mario Monreal, Narciso Yepes, Vicente Amigo, Michel Camilo, Ainhoa Arteta, Monserrat Caballé and Rocío Jurado.

José Antonio Domené is one of the leading Spanish harpists of his generation and is a native of La Alberca de las Torres. He too studied at the Conservatorio Superior de Música in the regional capital, then moved on to the Royal College of Music in London and winning various competitions.

He has collaborated with many leading Spanish orchestras, working most frequently with the Orquesta Sinfónica del Gran Teatro del Liceo de Barcelona, the Orquesta Sinfónica de Bilbao and the Orquesta Sinfónica de las Islas Baleares.

Georg Mark, a native of Salzburg, studied conducting and violin at the Vienna Conservatory and has worked with orchestras in Japan, South Korea, Venezuela, Russia, Austria, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Norway, Portugal, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Finland and Lithuania, including the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, the Nippon Yomiuri Orchestra, the Nagano Philharmonic Orchestra, the National Orchestra of Toulouse and the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra.

From 1991 to 2006 he was also the first guest conductor of the Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra of Moscow, and artists such as Julian Rachlin, Elisabeth Leonskaja, Angelika Kirchschlager, Nikolaj Znajder, Natalia Gutman and Till Fellner have all performed under his direction.

Alongside Russian music—where the emphasis is on Tchaikovsky and Shostakovich—works by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, Bruckner, Mahler and Berg are central to his repertoire. This affinity for music composed in Vienna also explains Georg Mark’s particular interest in the compositions of Johann Strauss.

The performance at the Auditorio Víctor Villegas in Murcia begins at 20.00 with tickets priced at between 9 and 15 euros.
