ARCHIVED - 36 municipalities of Murcia Region in confinement from midnight
Residents may not leave their home municipality other than for essential reasons in all red level areas
Conversely, residents from other areas are not permitted to enter a red level municipality other than for essential reasons
On Monday, the 4th January, the number of active covid cases in the Murcia Region was 4,497 and just a week later we are facing 9,234 active cases, according to the latest figures presented on Monday 11th January.
The figures of the last week have yielded the highest single week since the pandemic began and there is no doubt that a third wave has abruptly erupted in the region.
More than 76% of these new contagions are known to have originated through either leisure activity or in the domestic environment, or according to the spòkesman for the regional Covid Monitoring Committee, Jaime Pérez, a combination of both; one family member contracting the virus through a social contact and then infecting their family at home.
Once again the regional government is taking stringent measures to try and limit the spread of the contagions and on Monday announced that 36 municipalities would be confined and their bars prohibited from opening altogether from midnight on Monday.
The whole region is now on phase 2 high alert level with the risk considered extreme.
This means that residents from these 36 municipalities are not permitted to cross the borders of their municipality into another, so must shop within their localised area. Conversely, residents from outside of these municipalities are not permitted to cross over into the confined municipalities other than for essential reasons.
So for example, residents of Cartagena, which is now confined, are NOT permitted to drive into Mazarrón to shop at the market even though Mazarrón is NOT CONFINED.
This has left a "covid triangle" comprising Mazarrón, Alhama de Murcia and Totana in the centre of the region which are not confined, so residents of these three municipalities may move around freely within their "triangle" but may not enter the municipalities surrounding them. It also permits a further week of trading for bars and restaurants in these three municipalities so enjoy it while it lasts; the situation will be reviewed again next week!
These are the 36 municipalities which are now confined: Moratalla, Fortuna, Abanilla, Jumilla, Mula, Caravaca de la Cruz, La Unión, Ricote, Yecla, Albudeite, Santomera, Lorquí, Villanueva del Río Segura, Murcia, Las Torres de Cotillas, Cartagena, Molina de Segura, Alguazas, Pliego, Blanca, Lorca, Los Alcázares, Campos del Río, Cieza, San Pedro del Pinatar, Bullas, Torre Pacheco, San Javier, Águilas, Abarán, Ulea, Alcantarilla, Ceutí, Fuente Álamo, Cehegín and Archena.
In all of these, bars and restaurants are closed completely, day centres for the elderly have been closed, occupancy of any vehicle is limited to a maximum capacity of 50% (ie, a four seater vehicle may not transport more than 2 people) and occupancy is limited to 50% in theatres, auditoriums etc, with a maximum of 200 people for events inside and 500 outside.
The curfew from 23:00 until 06:00, limit on the size of a group permitted to meet as 6 people and external regional perimeter border closure are maintained.
Residents are NOT confined to their homes and may exercise and circulate without restriction within their municipality as long as masks are worn and social distancing maintained.
This leaves only nine municipalities which are not confined: Aledo, Alhama de Murcia, Beniel, Calasparra, Librilla, Mazarrón, Ojós, Puerto Lumbreras, Totana.
In these areas bars and restaurants may open their terraces to 75% of capacity, but are not allowed to open the interiors of their establishments.
Map showing the municipalities of the region.
Judging from some of questions received from foreign residents and some of the comments on social media, there are still some residents of the region confused about where the borders start and stop in their respective municipality.
The Region of Murcia is divided into 45 municipal areas, each one with its own local council. In each case there is a local town hall, located in the largest urban town or city of the respective municipality, which does make it very confusing for foreign residents. The most confusing of all is Murcia City which lies within the municipality of Murcia, which also includes outlying districts in areas such as Sucina and Corvera, each of which has a district mayor and this in turn lies in the Region of Murcia.
The map showing the Murcia municipality boundaries is below.
Some municipalities, such as Lorca, Moratalla and Cartagena are huge and residents who live in these may move around freely within the municipality, so those who live in La Azohía in Cartagena can drive all the way to Los Urrutias on the shores of the Mar Menor, and still be in Cartagena, but others, such as little Ojós or Ulea, are tiny.
Google maps is an excellent tool to give a good idea of exactly what is within your own municipality, Click here for Google maps
Another alternative is to use the town search box on the header of www.murciatoday.com; by clicking on the name of your municipality in the drop-down list, a huge amount of basic information about each municipality can be accessed, each one with a map.
