ARCHIVED - Bars and restaurants closed in 36 municipalities of the Murcia Region
The number of municipalities in confinement increased on Monday from 22 to 36 as the number of cases reported soars
“Many lives depend on the measures we take over the next few weeks,” said the spokesman for the Covid Monitoring Commission, Jaime Peréz.
76% of contagion is taking place in a combination of home and leisure environments; infection is occurring in leisure environments and is then being taken back to family members at home.
For this reason, the regional health ministry has decided to close bars and restaurants altogether in 36 municipalities and only permit service on the outdoor terraces of establishments in the few remaining lower tier municipalities. The Covid Committee spokesman made it absolutely clear that these spaces must be proper terraces and follow full social distancing measures: masks must be worn at all times, apart from when actively sipping a drink or taking a mouthful of food.
The Covid Monitoring Committee announced on Monday that a further 14 municipalities would be moving into Phase 2, bringing the total number of municipalities in confinement to 36.
The whole region is now on phase 2 high alert level with the risk considered extreme.
The principal measure imposed by the health authority this week is the total closure of bars and restaurants in the 36 municipalities considered to be extreme risk. Up until today, establishments in the extreme risk tier had been permitted to open terrace areas only, but due to the high number of transmissions taking place in leisure environments the decision has been taken to completely close these establishments with immediate effect from Monday evening, a bitter blow for beleaguered businesses which have been suffering intense financial pressure from coronavirus since the pandemic began nearly a year ago.
The regional government operates a four-tier system according to the level of cases in each municipality, with restrictions varying depending on the current situation in each tier.
The curfew from 23:00 until 06:00, limit on the size of a group permitted to meet as 6 people and external regional perimeter border closure are maintained.
Extreme transmission areas (shown as red on the map)

Residents from these 36 municipalities are not permitted to cross the borders of their municipality into another, so must shop within their local area. Conversely, residents from outside these municipalities are not permitted to cross over into the confined municipalities other than for essential reasons.

Background:
Last week covid cases in Murcia Region increased by 167 per cent; 1200 new cases reported on Sunday
Last week the region reported its highest level of new cases in one week since the pandemic began
On Sunday the Murcia region reported a further 1200 new cases of coronavirus, bringing to a close the worst week for new cases since the pandemic began nearly a year ago.
On Thursday 1,279 new cases were diagnosed and 1,444 on Friday , the number of new cases rocketing by 167% in just one week.
This week alone, 6,620 new cases have been reported in the Murcia region, of which more than half, 3,923, have occurred in the last 72 hours. On Monday, the 4th, the number of active cases in the Region was 4,497, and by Sunday that figure had almost doubled to 8,917. Of particular concern is the high increase in hospital admissions, which has grown from 235 cases on Monday to 401 on Sunday.
The health authority believes that this is just the start of a sudden rise in new cases as we enter the “third wave” and that the peak is still some weeks away.
It’s inevitable that the rapid rise in new cases will translate into a rise in hospitalisations and then deaths, as it has done every time the figures have started to increase, and by Sunday the total number of patients requiring hospital treatment had increased to 400, with 85 in intensive care, a worrying increase of 72% in just one week.
The regional health service is not hiding its concern over this sudden surge in new cases, and is warning that resources will soon be under significant pressure. The intensive care units are now at 70% occupancy and although there are other facilities which can be re-opened to cope with the increase in admissions, these need staffing, and as is the case worldwide, specialist ICU nurses are in short supply due to staff sickness, quarantining and there being a limited number of these specialised staff in the first place.
The R-rate has increased to 1.38, a figure not seen since the end of August when the second wave began.
