An additional 29 Covid patients have been admitted to hospitals in Alicante province and the rest of the region in four days
New cases have risen significantly and there has been a spike in hospitalisations following Easter Week and Valencia region's annual San Vicente holiday (April 25).
A week after Spain bid farewell to facemasks, which as of April 20 are no longer compulsory in most indoor venues, the regional Ministry of Health reported 6,093 new cases on Tuesday April 26, a sharp rise on the 4,017 infections last Friday (over 72 hours).
Coronavirus cases
The regional Ministry of Health has reported 6,093 new cases (over four days), up significantly on the 4,017 infections recorded on April 22 (over a three-day period). This brings the total number of positives since the beginning of the pandemic to 1,386,312 people.
By province, 1,515 have been reported in Castellón (169,268 in total), 1,940 in Alicante (476,051 in total) and 2,638 in Valencia (740,993 in total).
Of these new infections, 2,860 are people over 60 years of age - up 1,027 on the last update. By province: 746 are registered in Castellón, 842 in Alicante and 1,272 in Valencia.
Hospitalisations
There are currently 651 people admitted to hospital with Covid, 29 more than last Friday, 31 of them in ICU (three fewer): 133 in the province of Castellón, four in ICU; 170 in the province of Alicante, 10 of them in ICU; and 348 in the province of Valencia, 17 in ICU.
The Ministry of Health is no longer providing data relating to the number of active cases or how many people have overcome the virus since the last update.
Fatalities
13 Covid-related deaths have been reported since the last update, all of which occurred in the last seven days with the exception of one in March. This brings the overall death toll since the start of the health crisis in the Valencia region to 9,262: 1,079 in the province of Castellón, 3,518 in Alicante and 4,665 in Valencia.
The deceased are seven men aged between 69 and 90-years-old and six women aged between 78 and 96.
