ARCHIVED - Incidence grows 50 per cent over Easter: Murcia Covid update April 25
ARCHIVED ARTICLE
The Minister of Health of the Region has predicted an increase in Covid infections in the coming days
The after-effects of mass celebrations and increased social interaction over Holy Week have emerged strongly this week in the Region of Murcia, where the 14-day cumulative incidence rate has increased by more than 50% in the older population.
After see-sawing for several weeks, last week showed a clear upward trend in the incidence of coronavirus, and the figure grew by more than one hundred last Monday. As a result of a further climb on Sunday April 14, the regional Minister of Health, Juan José Pedreño, has issued a new call for personal responsibility and self-care, particularly since masks are no longer required indoors.
In any case, the minister has predicted more increases in the coming days, since “experience tells us that the increase in interaction increases infections.” However, the Region is in a strong position: it currently has a vaccination rate of 95.04% (with one dose) in the population over 12 years and one of the lowest mortality rates per community of the entire pandemic.
Coronavirus infections
The Region of Murcia has registered 194 new infections in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of cases since the beginning of the pandemic to 403,229.
Cumulative incidence rate
After a rise of more than 50%, the 14-day cumulative incidence rate has skyrocketed to 958.4 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, which is close to double the national Spanish average of 555 infections.
Moreover, the 7-day figure has jumped to 576.7 cases per 100,000, indicating that the minister is correct and the cases will continue to grow.
Hospitalisations and fatalities
There are currently 198 people admitted to hospitals in Murcia, 9 of whom are being treated for more serious cases in the Region’s ICUs. Both hospital and intensive care occupancy has remained relatively stable over the last week.
Three more Covid-related fatalities have been reported, which correspond to three women aged 77, 78 and 92.
In light of the worrying data, Mr Pedreño has assured that “the necessary material and human resources will be increased” if the Covid incidence rises again.
Vaccination data
Since the last update, 91.83% of the entire population of the Murcia Region has had a least one dose. In addition, 84.38% of people are now double jabbed.
Data at a glance from Sunday April 24:
Total positives diagnosed in the last 24-hour period: 194
