After weeks of fighting an uphill battle of rising infections during Easter and other national and local celebrations, the coronavirus data in Spain is improving greatly, leading many experts to believe that the peak of the dreaded seventh wave has already been and gone.

Over the course of the last week, the number of ICU beds occupied by Covid patients has dipped below the 4%-mark and while the incidence rate is still relatively high among the older populations, it now remains above 1,000 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in just one Spanish municipality.

Coronavirus infections

The Ministry of Health in Spain registered 33,992 new cases of coronavirus on Tuesday May 31, of which 17,653 infections were diagnosed in people over the age of 60.

This is a significant decrease on the 58,839 cases registered on the same day the previous week, and brings the total number of infections since the beginning of the pandemic to 12,360,256.

Cumulative incidence rate

As daily infections decrease, so does the current average incidence of cases over a 14-day period. This figure has dropped 65 points since Friday, standing at 663 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

The Spanish incidence rate is now calculated based on people over 60 years only, and in the last two weeks, 81,696 positives have been recorded in this age group.

However, the highest overall figure continues to occur in people 80 years and over, with 833 cases per 100,000, followed by over 70s (721).

By autonomous community, Andalucía continues to register the lowest data, dropping from 543 cases per 100,000 inhabitants a week ago to just 352 today.

At the beginning of the week, the 14-day figure in the Region of Murcia had experienced a huge drop down to 711 cases while the Community of Valencia continues to skirt well below the national average, with 569 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

At the other end of the spectrum, the region with the highest cumulative incidence rate is the North African enclave of Cueta (1,054), currently the only community above the 1,000-case mark, followed by Extremadura (980).

Hospitalisations and fatalities

There are currently 6,817 patients hospitalised for Covid throughout Spain, compared to 7,364 a week ago, with 355 being treated for more serious conditions in the country’s ICUs (down from 364).

This data means that 5.53% of all hospital beds are occupied by Covid patients (down from 5.94%) while the occupancy rate in intensive care has dipped from 4.07% to 3.98%.

In the last 24 hours a further 152 Covid-related fatalities have been reported, which brings the overall death toll since the start of the health crisis to 106,493 people.

The mortality rate of Covid in Spain is 9.5 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, according to statistics provided by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

Vaccination data

As of May 31, a total of 39,073,379 people, representing 92.6% of the population over the age of 12 are now double jabbed. In addition, 39,229,110 people, or 93%, have had at least one vaccine.
