ARCHIVED - On the lookout for a seventh wave: Andalusia Covid update April 29
ARCHIVED ARTICLE
A spike in infections and hospitalisations is keeping experts poised for another wave of coronavirus
As elsewhere in Spain, Andalucía is experiencing a slight rebound in the Covid statistics in terms of the number of infections, the incidence rate among over-60s, the number of hospitalisations and how many people are still dying from the disease.
The upward trend was predicted by most observers: since the end of March, people with mild symptoms no longer have to isolate and just last week, the Spanish government decreed the end of mandatory mask-wearing indoors. Experts are nevertheless keeping an eagle eye on the Covid data, particularly hospital numbers, to gauge whether or not we are headed for a seventh wave.
New infections
Over the last three days, there were a total of 8,705 new cases of coronavirus registered in Andalucía, of which 3,605 were detected in people over 60 years of age. This brings the total number of infections in Andalucía since the start of the pandemic to 1,452,644.
By provinces, Seville is once again the one with the most new positive cases with 1,869, followed by Malaga with 1,434, Cadiz with 1,213, Cordoba with 1,191, Almeria with 832, Jaen with 778, Huelva with 719 and Granada with 669.
Cumulative incidence rate
The 14-day cumulative incidence rate in people over 60 years old is 507.8 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, 86 more than at the last count. The province of Cordoba is leading the way with 764.2; followed by Huelva with 728.7; Almeria with 740.7; Jaen with 608.7; Seville with 436.9; Malaga with 406.3; Granada with 400.6 and Cadiz with 392.8.
Hospitalisations
There are currently 630 patients admitted for Covid-19 throughout Andalucía, which is a decrease of one person in Andalusian hospitals compared to last Tuesday, while the number of patients in intensive care units (ICUs) remains unchanged at 43.
Deaths
There have been 46 Covid deaths since Tuesday, compared with 39 deaths between Tuesday and last Friday. The overall death toll is now 13,619 people since the start of the pandemic.
Of the 46 deaths in the last three days, eleven were reported in Cordoba, eight in Seville and Malaga, seven in Almeria, six in Cadiz, four in Jaen and two in Granada.
Vaccinations
In Andalucía, a total of 7,424,684 people have received their full course of coronavirus vaccinations, which is 87.6% of the eligible population.
