ARCHIVED - Seven further municipalities join Los Alcázares and Abanilla in confinement
The number of new covid cases has almost doubled during the last week in the Murcia Region
In recent days the number of coronavirus cases reported in the Region of Murcia has started to climb significantly once again, as can clearly be seen in the graphic which shows the number of cases diagnosed on a daily basis.
The cumulative incidence of coronavirus cases per 100,000 inhabitants throughout the last two weeks has shot up to 284.6 cases, after falling below the 200 mark just before Christmas and the number of cases reported during the last week is double that of the previous week.
So when the Covid Monitoring Committee met on Monday morning for its normal weekly evaluation of the current situation it was not a question of whether additional measures and restrictions wouold be imposed, but more a case of what they would be and how widely they would be applied.
The two graphics below show how the accumulated incidence rate per 100,000 of population has changed dramatically since before Christmas and how dramatically the number of cases has soared in some areas of the region.
On the 21st December the accumulated incidence rate in the region was 79 over the last 7 days and 154 over 14 days; these figures are now 284 and 190.
Graphic 1 shows the situation on 21st December
At that point the worst affected municipality over 7 days was Albudeite with a rate of 655 cases per 100,000 of population, followed by Los Alcázares with 322, Fuente Álamo with 235, Moratalla with 153, Alguazaas 145 and Jumilla 132. Every other municipality was well below that level.
Graphic 2 illustrates the 7 day rate
Now we have Abanilla at 848, Villanueva at 790, Fortuna 702, Jumilla 492, Los Alcázares at 334, La Unión 331, San pedro 325,LasTorres de Cotillas 274,Santomera 259 and Ceutí 246.
Graphic 3 shows the 14 day rate
The 14 day rates are Abanilla at 1175, Villanueva at 859, Fortuna 830, Jumilla 703, Los Alcázares at 594, La Unión 400, San pedro 423, LasTorres de Cotillas 349,Santomera 339 and Lorca 327.
As a result, the monitoring committee has decided to impose more restrictive measures in seven more municipalities, effectively taking them back to phase 1 or 'extreme alert' level, effective from this Tuesday, January 5th and joining Los Alcázares and Abanilla.
Villanueva del Río Segura, Fortuna, Jumilla, San Pedro del Pinatar, Las Torres de Cotillas, La Unión and Santomera, will join Abanilla and Los Alcázares, with their external municipal borders closed.
Crossing these municipal borders will only be permitted for essential reasons, meaning those living in these areas will not be allowed to leave the municipality other than for essential purposes, and conversely, residents living in other municipalities will not be permitted to enter.
In addition the interior service areas of the bars, cafes and restaurant establishments will also be closed, so service will only be permitted on the external terrace areas.
Case numbers are also rising significantly in other areas as well, and there is particuloar concern at the rises in Murcia City (particularly the residential districts of La Alberca and Puente Tocinos), Cartagena and Lorca.
Twelve municipalities are now considered to be at high risk and may possibly join the nine municipalities already in confinement next week: Murcia City municipality which includes Sucina, Corvera, Gea y Truyols, Cartagena, Lorca, Molina de Segura, Lorquí, Mula, Ceutí, Cieza, Alguazas, San Javier, Ricote and Yecla. In these municipalities, additional restrictions will now be imposed; the capacity inside bars and restaurants is reduced to 30%, although outdoor terrace areas may be occupied to 100% of their capacity; consumption seated or standing at the bar is prohibited; the capacity in shops is reduced to 50%; parks and gardens must now close at 7:00 p.m. and social gatherings are limited to a maximum of six people; only up to 3 people can travel inside a private vehicle (maximum capacity of 50% in vehicle occupancy).
The restrictions will be reviewed again next Monday.
