ARCHIVED - Seventh wave has been and gone: Andalusia Covid update May 27
ARCHIVED ARTICLE
All coronavirus indicators are on a downward trend in Andalucía, which is one of the best performing regions in Spain
There has been a significant reduction in the number of new Covid-19 cases in Andalucía since last Friday, with around 2,000 fewer new cases in the last four days than in the last update period.
Likewise, hospitalisations and deaths are also down, while the cumulative incidence rate has reached its lowest figure for more than a month.
All of which is leading some spectators to observe that the feared seventh wave of Covid-19 in Spain is effectively waning already, and has passed on unnoticed by many. This in itself is a testament to the success of the vaccination programme, which has managed to deal capably with the removal of facemasks inside and the easing of other Covid restrictions.
New infections
On Tuesday May 31, Andalucía has registered a total of 3,369 new cases of coronavirus since Friday, of which 1,551 were in people over 60, bringing the total number of infections in Andalucía since the start of the pandemic to 1,511,845.
This is in comparison to the 5,103 new Covid-19 cases last Friday, of which 2,281 were in over-60s.
By provinces, Seville stands out with 639 positive cases, followed by Malaga (602), Cordoba (494), Cadiz (480), Granada (400), Jaen (280), Almeria (244) and Huelva (230).
Cumulative incidence rate
The current average incidence of infection in Andalucía in the last 14 days in people over 60 years of age has fallen below 400 points, standing at 389.73 cases per 100,000 inhabitants – the lowest figure for more than a month – which is 77.8 points less than four days ago.
Hospitalisations
The Regional Ministry of Health and Families has notified in its daily communiqué on the coronavirus that the region has registered this Tuesday a drop of only two hospitalised coronavirus patients compared to Friday to 679, which slows the decline that has been experienced in the last ten days, while admissions to intensive care units fell by nine to 31.
By provinces, Seville still has the most hospitalised patients with a total of 172, of which 19 are in ICU; followed by Malaga with 111, five in ICU; Cadiz with 104, two in ICU; Granada with 75, five in ICU; Cordoba with 61, four in ICU; Jaen with 60, six in ICU; Huelva with 60, two in ICU; and Almeria with 36, two in the intensive care unit.
Deaths
The number of deaths has dropped by nine people compared to four days ago, from 52 on Friday to the 43 deaths recorded on Tuesday.
