ARCHIVED - Specialist nursing home pandemic team dismantled in Murcia

The health authorities will maintain a smaller care team for vulnerable people in the Murcia Region
At the height of the coronavirus pandemic in the Region of Murcia, the health authorities developed a care model that was designed to strengthen the coordination between nursing homes, health centres, primary care services, hospitals, NGOs and other organisations such as the police and Civil Protection.
The model adopted by the Strategic Regional Coordination Service for Advanced Chronicity and Socio-Health Care (Corecaas) during this complex time greatly reduced the number of outbreaks in the Region but with the sixth wave seemingly abating, the health authorities believe that this service can be reduced to the “necessary resources” now required, which includes two doctors, several nurses and an administrative team.
And although comprehensive data is no longer released, a considerable outbreak among residents of a nursing home in San Basilio has been reported in recent days.
With the dismantling of the current system, the health authorities have assured that a new technical commission for social and health coordination will continue to improve "comprehensive care through coordinated work that optimises the health care received by the elderly and people with disabilities in the Region."
This commission will maintain the task of "addressing health care in residential centres for the elderly and people with disabilities."
However, Corecaas believes this will be wholly insufficient and has instead proposed the creation of a dedicated care team that pilots specific actions from each health area within the nursing homes; greater exchange of information that speeds up care for residents; standardise the process for prescriptions so as not to “discriminate” against residents “because of their worse access to the health system”; improve coordination between these institutions and health centres and upskill nursing home staff in "corporate training programs for health systems".
