ARCHIVED - The Chinese community of Cartagena donates 2,000 facemasks to the local police
ARCHIVED ARTICLE
Disinfectant gels and protective gloves were also delivered to the Policía Local of Cartagena
When the coronavirus first reached Spain a few weeks ago the Chinese community throughout the country suffered a fair amount of unwarranted negative feeling, but in Cartagena, as the population struggles to become accustomed to being confined to their homes, there can be few doubting the community spirit of those Chinese nationals who on Sunday and Monday made important donations of facemasks and other sanitation goods to the local police force.
The police, of course, are charged with ensuring that residents obey the orders to remain at home except when shopping for food and for other unavoidable reasons, and they were pleased to receive around 2,000 facemasks, 800 pairs of gloves, disinfectant gel and other materials from the owners of various Chinese “bazaar” stores in the municipality. The products were delivered from warehouses in Murcia and on the Paseo Alfonso XIII in Cartagena, while police officers also accompanied members of the Chinese community to the local College of Lawyers as they delivered another 100 facemasks to those who take on the cases of those arrested by the police.
Councillor Juan Pedro Torralba not only thanked the donors but also described the gesture as showing “the very best of human beings who, in times of adversity, unite and support each other”.

What to do if you are in the Region of Murcia and believe you may have contracted the virus
The regional government has set up a special helpline to supply information to members of the public (900 121212), and also urges people to call the 112 emergency services line if they suspect that they may have contracted the virus rather than going straight to hospital or to a medical centre. Medical staff will be sent to your home to test for the virus.
The Region’s public hospitals have limited the number of visitors to just one per patient.
Sensible precautions
The advice being issued to members of the public by medical authorities all over the world coincides on the following points:
- Wash hands frequently with either soap and water or a sanitiser gel
- Catch coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues – and throw the tissues away immediately after use before immediately washing your hands!
- If you don’t have a tissue, use your sleeve – and wash the item of clothing used at the next opportunity
- AVOID touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
- AVOID close contact with people who are unwell
- Don´t panic!
