ARCHIVED ARTICLE -
An extended programme of concerts until mid-December has been put together to celebrate a decade of the festival in Benidorm
Benidorm International Organ Festival celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, and to mark the milestone, music lovers will be given the chance to enjoy seven concerts between now and mid-December.
This is almost twice as many performances as last year, and as usual, they will take place in the Church of Sant Jaume and Santa Anna, which collaborates in the organisation of the festival and is home to a magnificent liturgical organ, "one of the best in the Valencia region", according to the Town Hall.
"Over the last 10 years, the festival has become one of the most important of its kind on the national scene, and in recognition of the tenth anniversary, we wanted to strengthen the event even more by introducing a series of novelties that enrich the festival and differentiate it from other events in the country".
As such, during five of the upcoming performances the sound of the organ will be complemented with that of other instruments or will be combined with other arts such as cinema or literature".
Benidorm's International Organ Festival kicks off on Friday, February, at 8pm with a concert by Jordi Vergés i Riart, titular organist atTarragona Cathedral and "one of the most outstanding performers in Spain".
The rest of the line-up is as follows:
March 25: Performance by Yuzuru Hiranaka, winner of several international prizes and professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Music.
April 29: Organist Monica Melcova will improvise melodies on the organ whilst the silent film 'The Kid' by Charles Chaplin is projected.
May 27: Teleman Trio perform a concert of organ, trumpet and soprano.
October 28: Instrumental combination of the clarinet will be performed for the first time at the event by Miriam Cepeda and Luis Alberto Requejo.
November 25: Enrico Tricario and the Lumina Ensemble on the organ and four saxaphones.
