ARCHIVED - Berber fiestas will go ahead in Los Alcázares in spite of flood damage

Murderous Berber pirates will continue to attack helpless fisherfolk as is normal every Easter!!!
This year is racing past and the Carnival celebrations have signalled the beginning of Lent, which means that Easter is just around the corner already!
Most of the Murcia Region is immersed in penitential processions over the Easter weekend, but in Los Alcázares the Easter weekend has always been spent in party mode, remembering the efforts of local farmers to defend themselves against attacks from Berber pirates which caused a severe depopulation in coastal areas for several hundred years.
The fiestas are hugely popular with visitors, who enjoy the large Mediaeval market, parade and mock battle on the beach across the weekend, but following three episodes of flooding in the last few months there have been fears that the fiestas would be affected due to the damage caused to infrastructure.
The worst affected has been the Parque de las Peñas Huertanas which was very badly damaged by the volume of water running down the rambla and has always housed the encampment of the festival peñas, but the festive groups involved have decided that the show must go on in spite of the damage and are busy making alternative plans for the fiestas.
There are still several final decisions to be made, but at the moment the mediaeval market will go ahead in the centre of the town as it always has done in the past, as will the procession.
The intention at the moment is for the battle when murderous pirates attack the fisherfolk of the town to take place on a different beach, the most likely contender being the Playa de la Concha, although this is still open for discussion. A representative from the peñas confirmed that this would permit the construction of a better public viewing stand, but also stated that no final decision has yet been taken.
There is no doubt, however, that the encampment must relocate, and the Polideportivo sports centre has currently been selected as the most appropriate spot, having plenty of space for partying.
Fortunately, the show will go on in Los Alcázares, in spite of the damage caused by the floods, local businesses looking forward to the support of visitors, following what has been an undeniably difficult winter.
