Bodies of 3 migrants found on Calblanque beach in Cartagena

The bodies of three men, believed to be migrants travelling in a patera (small boat) shipwrecked off Cabo de Palos, were discovered on Calblanque beach in Cartagena on Thursday December 8.

A hiker discovered the first two lifeless bodies on Cala Dorada, one of the beaches belonging to the Regional Park of Calblanque, Monte de las Cenizas and Peña del Águila.

The hiker notified the emergency services and Salvamento Marítimo, the Guardia Civil, Murcia Region's Community helicopter and the Red Cross immediately launched a search and rescue operation, discovering the body of a third male and recovering six survivors. The search continues for any other passengers as it's not clear how many people were aboard the boat when it sank.

The bodies have been taken to the Institute of Legal Medicine where post mortems will be carried out.

Between Wednesday evening and Thursday morning, four small boats with 35 people aboard have made the perilous journey from Algeria to La Azohía, Cabo de Palos (the one that sank), Santa Lucía, in Cartagena, and Cabo Tiñoso.

This isn't the first time this year that a patera has sunk with fatalities at sea. At the end of August, emergency services recovered seven bodies, including that of a four-year-old boy, at various points along the coastline of the Region of Murcia and Alicante.
