ARCHIVED - Bolnuevo Erosions damaged by the bad weather
ARCHIVED ARTICLE More than 63mm of rain had fallen by 1pm and it has continued to rain all afternoon
After 24 hours of torrential rain readers have been joking this afternoon on social media that the only thing we haven´t got over here in Spain at the moment is a plague of locusts to accompany our Coronacrisis, Brexit fall-out and seemingly endless flooding, but the blows just keep on coming and have clobbered one of the most distinctive landmarks in the region this afternoon!!!!
Readers around Mazarrón will be very upset to hear that the rains have caused further damage to the Bolnuevo Erosions today and the town hall has asked the regional government to intervene urgently, although there are one or two other priorities at the moment which may push the erosions a little further down the list.
The council has screened off the area to prevent the public getting too close just in case a large lump is dislodged by the wind and injures somebody!
The land is actually privately owned, although the owner is quite happy for the regional government to block off the area so that the public can´t access it and continue to erode the ground around the well- known natural sculptures as long as somebody else pays for it, of course.
The council is very keen for the regional government to foot the bill as the erosions are classified as a “Monumento Natural único de la Región de Murcia” and of course, the regional government has hundreds of monuments and natural spaces all clamouring for it to foot the bill and no money. Certainly it will have even less after the monumental costs of the coronavirus crisis have been calculated, so for the moment a bit of tickertape will have to be the maximum deterrent that anyone is willing to pay for and the arguments about who will foot the eventual bill can rumble on for a considerable time after the coronacrisis has abated.
The monument first started to show signs of damage several months ago when a large crack appeared, but the strong winds and torrential rain of last night were the final straw for this particular section of the popular Bolnuevo erosions.
