Planned activity raises €1,125 to buy desperately needed medical supplies for wartorn Ukraine
The latest planned activity to support the people of Ukraine on Camposol took place on A sector on Saturday August 20, when thanks to the overwhelming generosity of the attendees at the music event a further €1,125 was raised from raffle ticket sales. The music event was held jointly by Cat’s bar, Tel’s bar and Rendezvous. The people of Ukraine are still suffering and will continue to do so for some considerable time and, although this is the last planned event by these groups, they may look into other ways in which they can support the Ukrainians in the future.
The small group of volunteers began their activities in March soon after the Russian invasion of Ukraine when they were asked by the Councillor for Camposol, Silvana Buxton, to host a collection point for Ukraine on behalf of the Ayuntamiento at the social centre on Camposol. A call for further volunteers was successful and enabled the team to also hold collection points on the car park outside the Consum supermarket on specific days for several weeks.
By the end of April, many thousands of euros worth of donations in clothing, bedding, food and medicines had been collected and sent via the official distribution points set up by the authorities. The appetite for further donations in this format was waning and the team looked at other ways to support Ukraine, so a series of four activities was planned. The first was a music night at Mariano’s in May which raised €2,000, and they also raised €240 from a raffle at the games and karaoke evening at Rendezvous in June. At a quiz night at The Diner in July, a further €386 was raised from a raffle during the quiz.
The €2,000 raised in May has already been spent on medical supplies and taken directly to Ukraine by volunteer drivers who risk their lives every time they make the journey to Ukraine.
The team purchased the medical supplies from the Farmacia on A sector (as can be seen in the headline picture), so although there will be no further planned events for the foreseeable future you can still donate by going to the Farmacia and either donating money, which will be used to buy further supplies, or giving back some of your prescription items if you don’t really need them at the time you visit. They will be sent via the same route as the supplies purchased with the money raised. The journey of this final purchase will began Wednesday August 23 when the Farmacia exchanged the latest batch of supplies for the €1,751 the team handed over.
None of this could have happened without the volunteers who kindly gave up their time to take in the collections in the early days and those that continued to volunteer for the events, so a big thank you to everyone who has helped over the past six months. To the bar owners and other businesses that have hosted events, provided raffle prizes and been very supportive of these efforts, thank you. Finally, to those that have donated, whether living on Camposol or nearby or visitors in the summer months, in whatever form in the past six months, the team can say from feedback they have received that the people of Ukraine are extremely grateful for your continued generosity.
Those volunteers who are also members of the Camposol 2025 group will now continue to identify ways to improve Camposol through small projects such as the bin improvement project.
