More than 4,000 tourists visited Cartagena’s museums last Friday, of whom 29% were foreigners
After a year and a half of Covid restrictions and far fewer tourists than normal, Cartagena (Murcia) is reporting tourism figures close to those of 2019, mainly thanks to the arrival of cruise ships full of visitors. The number of museum visitors during September this year reached around 72% of the figure from 2019; and 140% of 2020’s number. On the open day last Friday September 24, with free entry for all visitors, 4,204 people visited Cartagena’s museums and archaeological sites; the Roman Theatre Museum was the most popular venue (1,549 visitors), followed by the Foro Romano (1,070 visitors). This figure of 4,204 is only 580 fewer than the open day in September 2019, which saw 4,784 visitors take advantage of free entry to Cartagena’s cultural attractions. There are also noticeably more foreign tourists this year; 29%, which is 21 points higher than on the same day in 2020. Meanwhile, 22% were national tourists and 49% were local residents from Cartagena. The high number of Cartageneros is due to the fact that the open day is held during the city’s Romans and Carthaginians Fiestas, on the municipality’s bank holiday (September 24).These positive figures are expected to continue rising throughout the remaining months of 2021, as over 40 cruises, carrying 40,000 visitors, are scheduled to arrive at Cartagena’s port before January 2022.Image: Archive
