The figures for January to September are not quite on a par with those of 2019, prior to the pandemic, but do inspire optimism for the recovery of cruise tourism in the Region of Murcia, a sector which implemented extensive anti-Covid measures and protocols when ports were reopened to cruise ships last year.
A total of 110 cruise liners have docked at the Puerto de Cartagena since January, which represents an increase of approximately 10% compared to the data for 2019.
But whilst the number of ships was up to the Port, which is undergoing extensive refurbishment work, the number of passengers was down compared to three years ago. This is because during the first half of this year, the shipping companies had holiday packages contracted from the previous year, when there were strict rules on the capacity of cruise ships. This meant that, in some cases, no more than 50% or 70% of the liners' cabins were occupied, bringing between 30% and 50% fewer tourists to Cartagena.
The situation has been steadily improving and the new packages that cruise companies have been contracted in 2022 represent a passenger capacity of between 70% and 80% which will help the volume of tourists to recover in this last stretch of 2022.
More than 70,000 seafaring tourists visited Cartagena in 2021, a far cry from the 249,369 passengers who arrived at the city port.
Looking ahead to the next three months, the number of liners expected to dock has now reached 81 – up 30 on 2019 – and provided no restrictions are imposed between now and the end of the year, the volume of cruise passengers will exceed 100,000.
In October, 35 stopovers have been confirmed, with more than 37,000 tourists aboard.
And December looks incredibly positive. Seven stopovers are expected, with 14,000 cruise passengers, almost double the 7,310 visitors who arrived in the same month last year.
