ARCHIVED - Coronavirus cases rise to 22 in the Region of Murcia overnight
The number of cases in Murcia remains relatively low compared to other areas of Spain
Overnight the number of coronavirus cases in the Murcia region has risen to 22, although the majority of the cases are considered to be mild and only four of the patients are hospitalised. The remaining patients are all at home in isolation and are being monitored by the regional health service.
The regional Minister for Health, Manuel Villegas, has confirmed that the number of those requesting tests for the virus has now exceeded 400 people, although the numbers remain very low compared to other areas of Spain. The analysis laboratory of the Virgen de la Arrixaca is now sharing the burden of the testing with the El Palmar laboratory on the outskirts of Murcia City, and both the Morales Meseguer in Murcia and the Santa Lucía in Cartagena are ready to also analyse tests should it become necessary to do so.
The minister said that most of the cases have come from contacts with Madrid, which is suffering the worst outbreak in Spain, and the regional health service is observing a large group of 25 people from Murcia who attended the wedding in Madrid which the first person to have become contagious in the Murcia region, had attended, along with a visit to the ARCO contemporary arts fair in the capital.
Nine health workers who had been in contact with patients who had tested positive were also under observation and were in isolation at home awaiting the test results.
National figures
It is proving difficult to confirm the exact number of cases as each of the 17 Autonomous Communities runs their own health service and produces their own figures, but these are the latest figures available:
The Spanish Ministry of Health released its latest figures for coronavirus cases in Spain as at 18:00 on Wednesday 11th March.
The total number of cases in Spain is 2,152 officially, although this figure is quoted as being 2,240 by the national media, who are gathering data directly from the 17 regional health authorities.
The number of deaths is quoted by the Spanish Health Authority as 50 people, although again, the figures gathered by the national media are a more accurate reflection of the current situation, their calculation of the number of deaths standing at 55.
The situation is highly fluid and new cases are being reported constantly, as are the measures being taken at local and national level to try and control the spread of the virus.
Worldwide there are now 124,357 reported cases and 4,618 confirmed deaths,
Spanish councils are finally starting to react and today there has been a raft of measures at local municipal level to try and limit the spread of the virus. Cultural and sporting events are being widely cancelled, museums and cultural centres closed (including the Prado in Madrid), fiestas cancelled, including the Fallas in Valencia and many other local fiestas in honour of san José which were scheduled to begin this coming weekend.

Most important measures introduced by the national and regional governments
- Schools are closed for at least two weeks in the regions of Madrid and La Rioja and in and around the city of Vitoria in the Basque Country.
- All major sporting events across the country, both professional and amateur, are to be held without spectators.
- The government is to provide financial support for employees who are obliged to reduce their working hours in order to look after children unable to go to school.
- In Madrid, La Rioja and Vitoria a ban is in place on cultural and other events where over 1,000 spectators are expected.
- The Statefunded “Imserso” holiday and travel scheme for pensioners has been suspended for at least a month.
- All direct flights from Italy to Spain have been cancelled until at least 25th March.
In the Region of Murcia
The latest information is that the number of SARS-CoV-2 cases detected in Murcia is 17, with no fatalities, no patients in intensive care and no patients given the all-clear as yet. 13 patients are recovering at home with mild symptoms and four are in hospital isolation wards.
The regional government and health service have introduced various measures including the following:
- Hospital visiting is limited to one person per patient
- The regional government recommends that employees be allowed to work from home
- Various events including congresses, concerts, conferences and sporting events have been cancelled or postponed, and others may well suffer the same fate as the epidemic spreads. We are this morning receiving an avalanche of press releases from the councils announcing the suspension of events, closure of theatres and closure of many public buildings for a two week period.
- The arrival of a cruise ship from Italy in Cartagena on 18th March has been cancelled.
Sensible precautions
The advice being issued to members of the public by medical authorities all over the world coincides on the following points:
- Wash hands frequently with either soap and water or a sanitiser gel.
- Catch coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues – and throw the tissues away immediately after use before immediately washing your hands!
- If you don’t have a tissue, use your sleeve – and wash the item of clothing used at the next opportunity.
- AVOID touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
- AVOID close contact with people who are unwell.
- Don´t panic!
- Those who suspect they may have contracted the coronavirus are urged NOT to visit A&E units or medical centres. Instead they should call either the 112 emergency services line or the 900 121212 number which has been set up to deal with the coronavirus in the Region: medical staff will go to their home to carry out the necessary tests and explain what further measures to take.
