ARCHIVED - Covid cases continue to rise in Murcia; Covid update July 19
ARCHIVED ARTICLE No new deaths have been reported in Murcia in the past day, although the number of new infections continues to rise
According to the latest data published by the Ministry of Health, Murcia has registered 239 new positive Covid cases in the last 24 hours, though thankfully no new Covid-related deaths have been reported.
This is considerably higher than the figures reported over the last two months and is 93 per cent higher than the figure reported last Sunday.
Thus, the total number of people who have contracted coronavirus in the region since the beginning of the pandemic stands at 119,296, while 1,609 people have sadly lost their lives.
Of the 239 new infections reported, 89 were in Cartagena, 38 in Murcia, 16 in Mazarron, 14 in Lorca, and 12 in La Union. The rest are distributed throughout the other municipalities in smaller quantities.
The combination of this means that there are now 3,017 active cases in the region, over 300 more than on Friday. 2,972 of these are mild cases and the patients are in home isolation, but there are now 45 people in hospital, a rise of 5 since Friday, although fortunately there are now only 7 in intensive care.
Minister of Health, Juan José Pedreño, announced after his weekly meeting with the Covid Monitoring Committee that almost
500 people in the Murcian Region who have been fully vaccinated have since contracted the virus. In most cases, the symptoms were very mild, as the vaccination minimises the effects of the coronavirus. The Minister has warned that people still need to be on the guard even after they have received the jab, and supported the new restrictions as a means of slowing down the increase in infections.
All of Spain is ramping up its vaccination rollout, and Murcia is no exception. Web appointments for the 20-29 year-old group are now being extended to the municipalities of Los Alcázares, Mula and Lorca, with the Ministry reporting that 91per cent of those over 40 have already received one dose of the jab, while 80 per cent have been fully vaccinated.
This week the Region of Murcia is expected to receive 59,600 doses of Pfizer and 22,600 of Moderna. Since vaccinations began in December, more than 1.5 million doses have now been administered.
