ARCHIVED - Covid incidence rate in Andalusia falls slightly; Covid update June 16
Andalusia has the highest covid rate in the country, but the level has dropped by four points in the last 24 hours
NB: Date shown on this graphic indicates that the figures published today relate to the data gathered yesterday.
The accumulated incidence rate of Covid infections in the eight provinces of the Andalusia region has fallen slightly in the last 24 hours by four points, taking the level across the last 14 days to 180.1 cases per 100,000 of population.
Nationally the average rate is now 101.39, the lowest level being that of the Valencia region at 39.19 and Andalucía being the highest.
It’s not the ideal position for the region as it heads into the summer tourist season and the authorities continue to vocally call for more vaccines to be made available, for mask wearing in public to continue and continues to enforce restrictions in an attempt to keep a lid on the level of contagions.
In the last 24 hour period the region has reported 1,196 new infections and one death, taking the number of fatalities from coronavirus since the pandemic began in the region to 10,139 according to data from the Andalusian Institute of Statistics and Cartography (IECA).
The 1,196 cases in the last 24 hours are fairly consistent with those reported in the last few days; 1,267 on Tuesday, 1,315 on Monday and Sunday, 1,405 on Saturday, 1,441 on Friday, 1,527 on Thursday and 1,263 last Wednesday.
Broken down by provinces, Seville is once again the province with the highest number of cases, reporting 301 in the last 24 hours, followed by Malaga with 263, Granada with 171, Córdoba with 147, Cádiz with 109, Huelva with 102 and Jaén with 70 and Almería with 33.
The only patient to have died in the latest reporting period was from Málaga province.
The latest figures leave only the province of Huelva at the extreme risk level, which means that the number of cases exceed the 250 cases per 100,000 of population point, in this case now reaching 262.9 (although this is a slight fall of nine points less than yesterday) with Almería at the other end of the scale, reporting the lowest rate in the region 68.5 cases per 100,000.
Hospitalisations increase for the third consecutive day
The total number of patients hospitalized in Andalusia with more severe cases of coronavirus rose by seven cases to 718 on Wednesday the third consecutive day of increases.
156 patients are in Intensive Care Units (ICU) , the same as yesterday.
Although the figures have increased again in the last three days, patient levels are lower than a week ago; seven days ago there were 767 hospitalized in the region.
Mondays and Tuesdays are usually days on which hospitalizations increase, but for some reason, the figures tend to decrease on Wednesdays, in fact, the last time they increased on a Wednesday was April 28.
The total in ICU remains unchanged in the last 24 hours at 156, and in fact, this is exactly the same figure as a week ago.
It is proving frustratingly difficult to bring down the numbers of patients in hospital at the moment , but the situation is markedly different at the moment to that experienced during the peak weeks of the pandemic; at the peak of the third wave on February 2 there were 4,980 patients in hospital; in the second wave on November 10 (3,478) and in the first on March 30, 2020 (2,708).
The same situation exists in the intensive care units with the current level at 156 for the last week; at the peak of the third wave on February 7 there were 735 in ICU: at the peak of the second wave on November 18 (528) and the first wave on March 30, 2020 (439 ).
So although Covid is clinging on stubbornly in the region, the situation is a long, long way from during the main peaks of the pandemic.
