ARCHIVED - Covid outbreak in Murcia rises to 32 cases
A refrigerated frut and veg. exporter has closed its plant in Murcia city after the latest cases were detected
Seven further cases of coronavirus were detected at the weekend relating to the outbreak which originated with passengers on a flight from Bolivia on June 3rd, which has brought the total number of people infected by these three original passengers up to 32, the largest outbreak located in the Murcian community to date.
According to the latest data updated on Sunday afternoon by the Ministry of Health, there are no more cases currently diagnosed in the second known outbreak from the same source, the second plane having landed on the 10th June, which brought a second set of imported cases to the Torre Pacheco municipality last week.
There has been some confusion on social media about these flights; the planes landed at Barajas airport in Madrid, which has continued to operate flights throughout the Covid crisis, passengers respecting the strict travel criteria that only those resident in Spain would be permitted to land here. All of those involved in these two outbreaks are Bolivian nationals, now resident in Spain, with the full right to return to their country of principal residence, which is Spain. All passengers on the flights are obliged to quarantine at home for 14 days.
There is a large south-American population working and resident here in the Murcia Region, historically working in the agricultural sector, although obviously there are many of south-American descent who now work across a range of sectors (some running excellent bars and restaurants serving authentic and excellent south-American food).
These last seven positives are linked into the agricultural sector again (unfortunately many of the latest outbreaks in Spain have been linked to this sector due to the mobility of workers who tend to move around with seasonal work) and the decision was taken at the weekend to close the El Raal plant of fruit and veg exporter Fruveco, which has one of the largest refrigerated warehouses in Europe and has plants in both el Raal on the outskirts of Murcia city and in Alhama de Murcia.
The company is a major exporter of frozen fruits and vegetables and it is believed that the cold conditions inside its storage units could potentially help the virus to spread. As a result, the decision was taken to temporarily close the El Raal installations to minimise the risk of the virus spreading to other employees.
All of the workers of the plant have been quarantined and will be tested via PCR this week, and the installations will not re-open until the General Directorate of Public Health has given its agreement.
The company has issued a statement to the effect that it has voluntarily closed its plant to protect its workers and that at no point has there been any request for it to do so from either the regional government or health department.
It also guarantees that it has not breached "any of the parameters required in terms of safety and hygiene in prevention and containment of Covid-19, as well as delivery of necessary material to its workers ».
70 close contacts of the first 25 infected cases within this outbreak are also in quarantine.
This outbreak has unfortunately pushed the figures of the Murcia region back up again during the first week of the “new normal” and there are now 58 cases active in the region, although the number of cases has fallen from the beginning of last week.
Fortunately the majority of the active cases are mild, with 49 patients in domestic quarantine, only 9 hospitalised and just one person in intensive care.
The total of 150 deaths since the first case was detected in the Murcian region on March 8th has remained stable, the last fatality to occur being on 9th June and the number of people cured is 1,472, the same as the day before yesterday.
A total of 3,321 people have tested positive for Covid-19 since the pandemic began in the Murcia Region, 1,677 by PCR swab test and 1,645 by antibody testing.
In the Region, 61,222 PCR tests have been performed (998 in the last 24 hours) and 60,774 serological tests ( 74 in the last day).
The Ministry of Health has reiterated its request that citizens exercise "prudence" and also "respect" for hygiene measures, using self-protection, social distancing and masks to avoid contagion.
